Adventuring in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered can be a lot of fun, but it's also dangerous, so having a helping hand is always useful. For this, you can get help from followers, who will back you up in battle and make dungeon delving feel just that little bit less lonely. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered has been a sensation, arguably more so than the original game was in 2006, but there are a lot of players – at least on PlayStation 5 – who are missing out on what many would consider Oblivion's best scene. Virtuos and Bethesda's work on Oblivion Remastered is a delight, greatly improving its visuals and making a few needed gameplay adjustments, but largely keeping the classic experience intact. It's been a great nostalgia trip to return to a game that I consider foundational in my love for RPGs.

A long, long time ago, there was amultiplayer Elder Scrolls game that allowed you to take the fight directly to Mehrunes Dagon, traveling to Oblivion to stop an invasion of demons. Nowadays, the conversation around the Elder Scrolls series is largely dominated by its more recent entries. It makes sense: Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim are all excellent games in their own right. But The Elder Scrolls has been a massive, influential series for a lot longer than those three games have existed. It's been around since 1994, and there's a lot more to it than its five core releases.

One of the most intriguing and well-written questlines in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered belongs to the Dark Brotherhood, the sinister guild of assassins. As one of the many guilds and factions you can in Oblivionas you journey throughout Cyrodiil, the Dark Brotherhood operates in the shadows in service to the Night Mother and Sithis. Unlike some of the other able groups, gaining entry to this family is a bit more complicated and requires some consideration, as it involves a sacrifice.

If you enjoyed playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered recently, I highly recommend that you tackle this other Elder Scrolls game, and it’s not Skyrim. Bethesda recently released a remastered version of the classic 2006 game, bringing forth a series of changes to the title, especially when it comes to technical improvements. The graphics have been updated, and everything within the title has been tailored toward current-generation hardware. There is also new voice acting in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, giving it more depth than the original. The changes are so profound that it’s been compared to a remake.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remasteredhas no shortage of great quests, but not every task on offer throughout the game is equal, and a lot of fans are in agreement that one in particular doesn't hold up. While the best side content in Oblivion Remastered focuses on memorable characters or reveals interesting corners of the world, the worst tends to be tedious fetch quest material. There's no shortage of things to collect, and at a certain point, it's easy to decide that items that can't be casually collected aren't worth the grind.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remasteredis often better at being an RPG than Skyrim, in no small part because of how variable its quests can be. In Oblivion, certain choices really do matter: whether it's an individual line of dialogue in a major quest, or a more nebulous, will-they-or-won't-they decision out in the open world, your actions will often have consequences.

Horses in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered may not be as realistic as those in Red Dead Redemption 2, but even if this does no favors to immersion, it can often make them much more fun to use in-game. While it might seem unfair to compare the two, some of the most interesting differences between them make both stand out. Revisiting Oblivion in 2025 via Oblivion Remastered makes the contrast even more striking, as the classic Elder Scrolls approach now feels like the product of a totally different time.

When diving into The Elder Scrolls series for the first time, it can be a little intimidating to know where to start. However, the more I played, the more my mind drifted to how stripped back many of Skyrim's mechanics and features were, and this only got worse as I started playing through one of my favorite guild questlines.
