Murder Mystery 2 isn't as great as the original movie, but its cliffhanger ending hints that Murder Mystery 3 could be the best in the series. The whodunnit genre has gotten hugely popular ever since the late 2010s, and Netflix has capitalized on that more than any other streamer or studio. The platform released Glass Onion and Murder Mystery 2 in quick succession, and while the Sandler-starring vehicle might not be as positively received by critics, it's a hit with subscribers. Following the success of the first movie it was only a matter of time until Murder Mystery 2 was greenlit, and based on the sequel's ending, Murder Mystery 3 is likely too.
The Murder Mystery franchise follows Audrey and Nick Spitz (Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston), who find themselves caught up in suspicious deaths in exotic locations. The new Netflix movie mostly takes place in Paris, and just like most sequels, it's bigger, way more explosive, and features a more outrageous narrative. And just like the original Murder Mystery, Murder Mystery 2 sets up another sequel, only on more of a cliffhanger. Not only does it tee up Murder Mystery 3, but it hints at a much bigger story and confirms the villain, potentially making it the best movie in the series.
Murder Mystery 3 Needs To Explain What Happens After The Pilot Ending
Murder Mystery 2's ending sees Nick and Audrey in a helicopter and holding a dinosaur leather bag that costs $3 million. The European pilot who flew them to the Maharajah's private island drops his accent and holds a gun to them, demanding they hand over the case. He then parachutes out of the helicopter leaving the Spitzes to crash.
Unfortunately, as Murder Mystery 2 skipped the Orient Express tease that was set up at the end of the first movie, the helicopter pilot could forever be a loose end. However, given how central the pilot is to Murder Mystery 2's dramatic ending, Murder Mystery 3 must pick up where the sequel left off. It's simply too big of a cliffhanger to ignore, and by leaving it unresolved, the door is open for a third film to fill in the blanks.
Why Murder Mystery 3 Could Be The Best In The Series
While the Murder Mystery series is rated "rotten" on Rotten Tomatoes, the movies are total audience pleasers, and they absolutely deliver on the actual whodunnit story. As Nick and Audrey are getting better and better at crime solving, and Sandler and Aniston's chemistry only gets more fun with every release too, Murder Mystery 3 could be the best yet so long as it has a compelling mystery at the center. But more than anything, it's the ensemble cast that makes Murder Mystery 3 exciting, as Sandler expressed that he'd love to get Shaquille O'Neal for the threequel (via Entertainment Tonight).
Murder Mystery 3 hasn't been confirmed, and based on Sandler's apparent reticence towards sequels, it might not be guaranteed. While most of Sandler's movies are huge hits, he has only ever returned for a sequel twice outside of the animated Hotel Transylvania series. The first sequel is 2013's Grown Ups 2, and the second is Murder Mystery 2. However, given how successful Murder Mystery was for Netflix and how successful Murder Mystery 2 will undoubtedly be, and that the genre's popularity continues to snowball, the streamer will undoubtedly throw as much money at Sandler and Aniston as it takes for them to return.
