Warning! Spoilers ahead for Absolute Superman #6!A brand-new piece of information has come to light about the Absolute Universe's be Absolute Superman's boldest change yet.
In Absolute Superman #6 by Jason Aaron and Carmine Di Giandomenico, Superman's ship finally finds a habitable planet for Kal-El, bringing him to the Kent farm in Kansas. In the Absolute Universe, the Kents are still farmers, but their farm is being stymied by Lazarus Corporation.
After landing, Kal-El is taken in by the Kents and he stays with them for two weeks (unable to communicate due to Superman's Sol armor needing to recharge). Unfortunately, after damaging Lazarus property, the organization tries to bring Kal-El in and the boy makes an escape after his new guardians insist he run away.
Absolute Superman Barely Got to Know the Kents
They Were a Part of His Life, But Not By Much
In the Absolute Universe, Kal-El still lost his home planet of Krypton, but it wasn't until he was old enough to see it fall to corruption and greed. Rather than never knowing his parents, Kal-El knew them quite well and was devastated when he was separated from them as they tried to leave Krypton together. Kal-El wound up on Earth where he went on the run, traveling from place to place and fighting back against a megacorporation known as Lazarus, whose top minds have a serious interest in capturing him and putting an end to Absolute Superman's heroics.
It's interesting how Absolute Superman has essentially flipped the script when it came to the Man of Steel's parental influences. In the Prime Universe, Superman knows Jonathan and Martha, while having little-to-no firsthand information about his Kryptonian heritage. Here, it's the opposite, and it's the Kents who are essentially strangers to him. Of course, Kal-El does seem heartbroken that the temporary peace he finds on the Kent farm is taken away so quickly, showing how much he did care about the Kents. But fans probably aren’t going to like how downplayed two of Superman’s biggest anchors are in this universe.
Can Absolute Superman Be the Same Person Without the Kents in His Life?
What Does This Change Mean for the Man of Steel?
It’s a bold move to downplay the Kents in Superman lore, even if this is an alternate world. But the whole point of the Absolute Universe is to mix things up and see what still holds true for characters when elements are changed or removed. There’s no doubt that not being raised by the Kents has changed how Kal-El views the Earth, but he’s obviously still a good person with a good heart. It might take some time to really see how this change affected Absolute Superman, but it’s almost certainly going to generate debate among fans.
