WandaVision, which introduced Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), a witch who turned out to be one of the show’s antagonists, and she became widely popular with the audience.
The success of WandaVision and its impact on the rest of the MCU made way for a spinoff TV series focused on Agatha, titled Agatha: Coven of Chaos. The series is being described as a “black comedy” and will see the return of Hahn as Agatha after Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) trapped her in her “Agatha” persona from Westview. Coven of Chaos is projected for a late 2023 release and it’s already adding more names to its cast, such as Aubrey Plaza, who is reportedly playing the villain, which means Agatha will go through a big change from villain to, possibly, an antihero.
Why Marvel Could Make Agatha Harkness An Antihero
Agatha raised suspicions when her appearance in WandaVision was confirmed, and all the rumors turned out to be correct when she went from being Wanda and Vision’s nosy neighbor in Wanda’s sitcom to revealing herself as a fellow witch, and a very powerful one, as she had been manipulating recent events inside Westview, including sending a fake Pietro Maximoff (played by Evan Peters) to watch over Wanda. Agatha’s goal was harnessing Wanda’s magic, but Wanda was ultimately able to defeat her, draining the magic out of her, becoming the legendary Scarlet Witch, and imprisoning Agatha as the sitcom character she chose for herself.
Agatha ended up being very popular with the audience thanks to Hahn’s performance and the character’s twist and story, and Marvel seized her success by giving her her own TV series. Although the MCU has already seen characters who aren’t exactly heroic leading their own shows, as was the case of Moon Knight, Aubrey Plaza’s casting as the villain in Agatha: Coven of Chaos points at Agatha going from villain to antihero in her series, which makes sense when looking at her comic book history. In the comics, Agatha is also a powerful witch but also a mentor to Wanda in the use of real magic, and she wasn’t really a villain, so this change in Coven of Chaos is quite fitting.
Who Aubrey Plaza Could Play In Coven Of Chaos
In typical Marvel fashion, details about Plaza’s character in Agatha: Coven of Chaos are being kept under wraps, and as the MCU has made a lot of changes to its characters to fit its tone and vision, it’s not easy to deduce who she will play. However, it’s being speculated that she could be playing Morgan le Fay, a villain loosely based on the enchantress of the same name from Arthurian legend. In the comics, Morgan comes from a species of humanoid magical beings called fairies and is the half-faerie half-sister of King Arthur. Morgan is a former pupil of Merlin and has mastered the mystic arts, and she has tried to take over the world a couple of times. Another possibility is that Agatha: Coven of Chaos will introduce Salem’s Seven, a group of magical beings and former supervillains who, in the comics, are the grandchildren of Agatha. As WandaVision showed the Salem trials in a flashback, Salem’s Seven could go through a couple of changes to fit Agatha’s backstory and Plaza could play one of its . Agatha might be on her way to facing yet another powerful witch, and it’s to be seen how this will impact the rest of the MCU.
