Sarah Dessen's novels have that timeless quality to them that makes them perfectly adaptable for teen audiences today or 20 years ago. Along For The Ride is the latest of her novels to get the movie treatment, and there are a few more coming from Netflix. The summer movie sees teenagers bonding and embracing their dreams, though none of them base their decisions on what their zodiac signs would do.
While characters like Leah and Esther would probably be very interested in finding out just how Auden's personality lined up with her zodiac sign - or not - most of the other characters would likely dismiss astrology completely. That doesn't mean fans can't figure out the zodiac signs of those spending the summer in Colby based on their personalities and interactions in the movie.
Aries: Adam
Adam isn't as large of a part of Auden's story as the other girls who work at Clementine's, but he is one of the teens she makes friends with during her summer in Colby. He also happens to have a crush on Maggie, and he's not afraid to voice how awesome she is at all times.
It's Adam's ion and his tendency to not think about the consequences of anything he says that make him an Aries. Aries are ruled by their ions. That can often make them impulsive, but it also makes them extremely loyal.
Taurus: Eli
The Taurus is often termed the "security-loving" sign of the zodiac. People born under the sign tend to be resistant to change, hence their reputation for being stubborn, and incredibly protective of those they are close to. Both of those traits can be found in Eli.
Eli doesn't want to make any big changes in his life unless he has someone to push him into them, or a safety net to fall back on. He's terrified of hurting those close to him as well, though that is largely the result of his friend's early death more than his Taurus traits.
Gemini: Leah
Leah is the most bubbly and outgoing of the group that works at Clementine's. She might complain about outings to the BMX track, but she's always quick to find a way to have a good time no matter where she goes.
Leah's outgoing personality and her ability to adapt to situations her friends drag her into are both Gemini traits. Geminis are the chameleons of the zodiac, able to shift and adapt as situations call for it.
Cancer: Heidi
Heidi is an incredibly interesting character. At first glance, she might seem like a Gemini as well since she's certainly adaptable. She's also got the business sense and ambition of a Capricorn. At her heart though, Heidi is very much a Cancer, in touch with her emotions and finding the good in everyone.
Heidi welcomes Auden with open arms, treating her as though she's her own daughter. Heidi sees the good in her husband even as he's ignoring her and their newborn in favor of his book. She even bonds with Auden's mother when the audience can see there's no way for them to be more different from one another. She embodies the kindness and empathy of a Cancer perfectly.
Leo: Jake
"The Jake" as he is often called when he appears in the story, likes to be the center of attention. He usually the center of attention as the person welcoming the new girls to town, as Maggie points out.
Jake isn't a bad guy. He thinks highly of himself, which can be a trait of a Leo as much as loving attention is. He's also a guy who understands consent, and when Auden isn't interested in him, immediately backs off. Jake only wants to be around people who appreciate him.
Virgo: Victoria
Victoria certainly shows the organizing and planning side of a Virgo as soon as she's introduced. A professor, she has much of Auden's future planned for her. It's not until much later in the movie that she demonstrates the nurturing side of a Virgo.
That comes when Auden calls her for help because Heidi is overwhelmed with her baby and her absent husband. Victoria proves that as much as she might not understand Heidi's love of the beach and the color pink, she doesn't fault Heidi for being exactly who she is, and offers her some motherly advice. She even apologizes to Auden for holding onto her too tightly, something Virgos can definitely be guilty of with people they care about and want to keep close.
Libra: Auden
Libras are all about balance. They can see the good and the bad in any situation and just like Virgos, they love a good pro and con list. As a result, however, they can be indecisive, which is why they work best when they have a partner or good friend to bounce their ideas off.
Auden has that once she spends time in Colby with Maggie, Leah, and Esther. While Auden's used to being caught in the middle of her parents and not having to make a decision, the Clementine's girls help open her up and bit and allow her to show off the charm that Libras have. She also becomes something of a voice of reason for Eli, giving voice to the things he's afraid of and offering up a new point of view for him.
Scorpio: Maggie
Maggie can be as bubbly as a Gemini when she wants to, and she's certainly got Capricorn ambitions. Maggie also, however, has the secretive tendencies of a Scorpio, and the aggressive approach to goal-making the sign takes.
Maggie keeps herself closed off from newcomers to her social circle until she's sure she can trust them not to hurt her, as she does with Auden when their introduction is Maggie's ex being interested in Auden. She is as academically talented as Auden with a plan for university. She doesn't let anything stop her from seeing something she wants - to compete in BMX - and going after it with all she's got.
Sagittarius: Robert
Robert seems like he has the ambition of a Capricorn with his desire to get his book fully written over the summer break from teaching. As Victoria points out, however, what he really loves is the process or the journey, not the finished product. That's very much like the Sagittarius always searching for their next point of satisfaction.
He's also got the blunt nature of a Sagittarius, and the love for his space, which is what initially drives him and Heidi apart until they can both talk about things and share the responsibility for their new baby.
Capricorn: Abe
The audience only gets to know Abe through the stories of Eli and his other friends. By all s, he was a loyal friend and had lofty ambitions that he was willing to work for.
He sounds like the embodiment of a Capricorn chasing his goals. His plan of moving to Barcelona to compete is never realized, but he still feels like a large presence in Along For The Ride.
Aquarius: Esther
Esther might be the quietest of the teenagers working at Clementine's but she's also the first to welcome Auden to town, and she clearly doesn't care what anyone thinks of her. Her quiet demeanor isn't because she's shy, but because she knows who she is and doesn't feel the need to prove herself.
Esther is very much an Aquarius who has already found her own path to walk. She'll her friends in their outings, but she'd rather sing a folk song or participate in a food fight than play a game of beer pong.
Pisces: Clyde
Clyde plays a larger part in the novel than he does in the Along For The Ride movie. He owns several businesses in the small town of Colby, like the laundromat, the small cafe/arcade where Eli treats Auden to pie, and even the bike shop.
Though the audience doesn't get to see much of Clyde, his eclectic shop with board games, pie, and music shows off his creative side. Creativity is often one of the first things people think of when they think of the daydreaming Pisces. Clyde also has the Pisces empathy as he renames the bike shop to honor Abe.
