FX's American Horror Story might bring a different story to each season with brand new characters and scares, but one thing the show has done is bring back lots of the same actors. Throughout the show, Ryan Murphy has relied upon core cast such as Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters to return time and time again, playing new roles and telling unique stories each time.
While not every recurring actor has been brilliant, seeing who is going to be back and who they will be each season is one of the most exciting parts of the show. With its huge 10th season coming up on the horizon, which actors should come back once again, and which can fans do without seeing this time around?
Need To Return: Zachary Quinto
Zachary Quinto is an incredibly talented actor, and anytime he is involved in a project he instantly improves it. When it comes to this show, he has been involved twice, in the first two seasons, with Quinto taking on a lead role for Asylum.
It's been a long time since he was involved in this franchise, therefore he would feel like a fresh name to bring back into the show. Plus, because he's such a great actor, it's easy to slot him into a variety of roles, either as the clear hero or the villain.
Can Stay Away: Emma Roberts
There's no denying that Emma Roberts is a talented actress and someone who has played a huge part in the success of American Horror Story. She's been one of the most used actresses in the show, but the only problem is her roles always tend to be very similar.
She seems to have been typecast within this franchise of always being the obnoxious, mean girl who doesn't like others. It's time for the show to move on from that role and allow other actors to get the chance to shine.
Need To Return: Naomi Grossman
Naomi Grossman is well known for taking on the iconic role of Pepper in American Horror Story, which she did in both Asylum and Freak Show, while she was also part of the Apocalypse season as well. However, it would be nice to see her return and take on another major role, one that isn't Pepper.
While she did an amazing job with that character, fans want to see more of Naomi Grossman the actress due to how versatile she is. Seeing her pop up once again in a fresh role would be a welcomed decision by fans.
Can Stay Away: Cheyenne Jackson
Cheyenne Jackson has been involved in American Horror Story four times now, and he is certainly someone who has played a big part in the series. However, he is someone who would be best to keep out of the show for the season.
While Cheyenne is a very talented actor who can play a variety of roles within a season, however, his characters have never been overly exciting or engaging. Therefore leaving him out for the next season wouldn't be the worst idea.
Need To Return: Denis O'Hare
Denis O'Hare was a huge part of the show in the first few seasons, and every character he took on was completely different from the one before. He always brought his very best to the show and his commitment to the characters really made him stand out.
However, despite being such an iconic part of American Horror Story's history, he hasn't actually been part of the show since Roanoke. For someone so versatile and dedicated, Denis O'Hare is someone Ryan Murphy should consider bringing back in, and he is someone that the fans would certainly be very happy to see return.
Can Stay Away: Alison Pill
Alison Pill has only actually been involved in one season of the show, which was Cult. The issue is that her character was one that audiences didn't really take to or like. She was initially seen as a ive and caring wife, but it turned out that she was one of the main antagonists within the series.
However, because the character wasn't very popular and lacked the emotional depth that normally comes with this series, Alison Pill isn't someone that audiences are desperate to see back. With this being such a monumental season, it makes more sense for her to be left out.
Need To Return: Connie Britton
Connie Britton was one of the lead actors in the original season of American Horror Story, and because of that, it would be nice to see her return heading into the 10th installment. Connie is a talented actress and her role as Vivien Harmon was one that really helped push this show from the start.
The inaugural Murder House season remains one of the greatest in the history of the show and that is largely down to the work that Connie puts in. Because she's not been seen since her cameo appearance in Apocalpyse, she would be a welcome addition back to the series.
Can Stay Away: Neil Patrick Harris
Neil Patrick Harris is a tremendous actor and one that is very iconic and well-known. He's been involved in some amazing shows over the course of his career, and he played a part in American Horror Story: Freak Show. However, his character was one that felt very randomly thrown into the series and didn't quite work.
Since that point, the How I Met Your Mother star hasn't returned to the horror anthology series, and that is the best way to keep it. Despite the fact that he's a great actor, slotting his personality into this series proved to be difficult.
Need To Return: Jessica Lange
When it comes to actors who need to return, the most glaringly obvious person who has to come back is Jessica Lange. She was a huge part of the show and has had some of the most iconic roles in the series, but she hasn't been seen since her cameo appearances in Apocolapyse.
Because the season is a huge anniversary for a show that Lange really helped to make famous, it would be fitting for her to come around again. She's a tremendous actress and someone who could really add some excitement to the show amongst fans.
Can Stay Away: Michael Chiklis
Michael Chiklis' character in Freak Show remains American Horror Story, and because of that, it's no real surprise that he's not returned to the show since that stage. The character didn't have the impact that was clearly intended and lacked the emotional depth that other characters in this series provide.
Considering that Michael hasn't been used since his original appearance in the series, it seems unlikely that he will be brought back again, especially for such an important season for the show.
