Even prior to its release, the next big movie of Ana de Armas is already tagged as controversial — here’s why that's the case for Daniel Craig’s James Bond, Ana de Armas’ career is noticeably gaining momentum. This year alone, the Golden Globe-nominated actress has three films set for release, and although none of them has firm premiere dates yet at the moment, one has already garnered mixed reception due to its sensitive matter and plot execution.

Although de Armas has only recently gained international recognition, she has been acting since her teenage years in Cuba. From the age of 16, she has landed the central parts of various films and television series, including Una rosa de Francia, El Internado, Hispania, La Leyenda, and Por Un Puñado de Besos. After moving to Los Angeles in 2014, she has decided to study English, thus opening her up to more opportunities and avoiding getting pigeonholed as a Latina actress.

Why Ana De Armas' Marilyn Monroe Movie Is Controversial

Written and directed by Andrew Dominik, Blonde is an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 novel of the same name. While the film has been delayed numerous times even before the pandemic, Netflix reportedly moved its release date due to its overly graphic content. Since Blonde’s source material is a fictionalized chronicle of Marilyn Monroe’s life, it is not entirely biographical, and certain creative adjustments are made. In fact, a notable scene in Oates’ reimagining is Monroe’s first movie audition. Although it leads to her career being launched, that audition, unfortunately, involves harassment and sexual violence, which is then translated onscreen. Because the film has scenes depicting these sensitive themes, Netflix has awarded Blonde an NC-17 rating. Hopefully, when Ana de Armas’ Marilyn Monroe movie gets released, it will tastefully portray the struggles — no matter how fictionalized — of the Hollywood legend.
