Mac with the next operating system update, macOS Monterey. Among the most exciting is a streamlined and enhanced Safari browser that combines the search bar with the tab bar and adds tab groups that are shared across all Apple devices. Apple integration continues with a new type of cursor and keyboard sharing that is nothing short of revolutionary.

iPad still shows iPadOS, but will respond to the cursor, accept gestures and keyboard input from the Mac. This is a very impressive implementation and something that hasn't been seen before on any platform. Even more incredible, no setup is required, 'it just works.'

Safari is a powerful and efficient browser with iPhone, iPad, and Mac, adding or removing tabs as needed with each device updating automatically, resulting in seamless browsing across devices. Safari has built-in translation and now that has been extended to the entire Mac system, even many third-party apps. s just need to select text, right-click and choose the translate option to replace the selection with the translation.

Live Text, Facetime & More

The Photos app will gain Live Text capabilities with the new version of macOS, making text that appears in an image selectable and translatable also. For example, a will be able to copy text from Photos for use elsewhere and even start composing a new email by clicking an email address found in a photograph. Spotlight can also find text in photos, demonstrating how thoroughly Live Text is integrated throughout macOS Monterey. More media options will also be available thanks to other as a HomePod can.

FaceTime is integral to the MacBook and macOS Monterey will make it better than ever with advanced audio and video features, including Spatial Audio that places sound relative to the position of the speaker on the screen and Voice Isolation that virtually eliminates background noise, making the 's voice sharp and clear. Portrait mode for FaceTime, gives the background clutter a pleasing blur so the focus is on the person, not their surroundings. Then there's SharePlay which will let a Mac share the screen, music, and video with an entire group. FaceTime video calls will even be accessible to Windows and Android s, although Apple didn't clarify how much of the experience carries over to those platforms.

In the future, notifications will also become more manageable with the ability to group them according to work, personal, and sleep categories, while 'Do Not Disturb' will remain an option for complete silence and focus. The Notes app will also be improved with Quick Notes being able to sync with a webpage so the note will appear along with the website in Safari, and text snippets will be highlighted in context on the webpage. It will greatly improve workflow for anyone doing website design or referencing online material. Being a developer conference, Apple also built in some coding to keep everyone happy. For example, Shortcuts are coming to the Mac, which will be more familiar to iPhone and iPad s than the older Automator and Apple Script technologies. Automator workflows can be imported into Shortcuts, so existing code that is being relied upon won't be lost when using the new system. Overall, Apple appears to be hitting it out of the park with so many new and exciting features coming to macOS later this year.
