Attack on Titan stood firmly in the spotlight of the anime community for over a decade. From its game-changing first season, to the extended wait for its follow-up and eventual controversy surrounding the series' changing studios, fans gathered in masses to watch and discuss each new episode as it premiered. The series played a major role in helping to deliver anime to mainstream status outside of Japan, and remains an integral part of countless new viewers' journeys into the art form.

All the fanfare lasted until the very end of Attack on Titan's wildly drawn-out conclusion, and despite a relatively lukewarm reception of the finale from viewers, many looked back on the anime with fond memories. However, it seems the franchise is refusing to rest, as a recent appearance by producer Tetsuya Kinoshita revealed plans to continue the series in coming years. Fans may be excited at the opportunity to see their favorite characters on-screen and beyond once more, but after an incredibly impressive decade-plus run, it's time to let Attack on Titan die.

Attack on Titan's Producer Reveals Plans to Continue the Series

Long After Its Finale, Attack on Titan Will Continue Onward

During the Los Angeles debut of Attack on Titan - Beyond the Walls World Tour: The Official Concert, a setting far removed from the pages of Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine where Hajime Isayama's original manga debuted, series producer Tetsuya Kinoshita revealed that Attack on Titan wouldn't be going anywhere. In retrospect, the series is likely the most unexpected success story since the similarly post-apocalyptic Neon Genesis Evangelion, and, unfortunately, it seems fated to endure the same sort of bastardization in the years following its conclusion.

Kinoshita said, "We plan to continue creating films like Last Attack, concerts like this one, and various game collaborations moving forward." Attack on Titan: The Last Attack is a theatrical film that covers the events of the anime's ending, which came to the U.S. in January 2025, well after the three-year-long The Final Season finally adapted the supposed finale.

There is no more story to be adapted, it's all done. Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan came to a close in April 2021, and has yet to be revisited by the creator. Nevertheless, it seems the anime will continue onward with no more source material to follow. What shape or form it plans to take remains to be seen, and though there are options for expanding the series' universe and lore, are they truly necessary or is Attack on Titan simply too profitable to let die?

Where Can Attack on Titan Go After Reaching Its Final Resting Point?

Armin, Eren, and Mikasa by the ocean in Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan, despite being home to some of the most disturbing moments in anime history, achieved a level of success very few titles have ever reached. A large part of that had to do with a cast of characters that viewers bonded with instantly, and any continuation of the series would need a strong focus on these characters to perform well. The route with the highest probability of success would likely involve isolated stories centered around characters like Armin and Mikasa after the events of the Rumbling.

Additions to the franchise like these might be harmless, but would serve little purpose to the overall narrative other than a reason for fans to buy tickets. The alternate universe route has become popular in recent times, and viewers might just be treated to the characters in comedic classroom scenarios or entangled in some rom-com love triangles. From commentary on war, cycles of abuse, and violence, Attack on Titan could transition to slice-of-life gags and low-stakes drama. What could go wrong?

Armin Arlert and Eren Jaeger share a heartfelt goodbye in Attack on Titan.

There is always the possibility that MAPPA simply remakes the sections of the anime produced by Wit Studio, and cuts them up into a series of theatrical films. This might offer fans a more consistent, big-budget visual experience, but would ultimately boil down to questions of why exactly any of that would be necessary. Unfortunately, there are few reasons other than the fact it would be a profitable venture. Attack on Titan is set to continue despite having already ended long ago, and, like the tragic protagonist Eren Yeager, seems fated to live long enough to become the villain.
