The Avatar movies contain many powerful and dangerous creatures populating the world of Pandora, but some of them rank higher than others. James Cameron's franchise is notable for many reasons, including its use of groundbreaking special effects. Those visionary effects have not only helped the first two Avatar movies gain a place among the highest-grossing releases ever, but they have also brought the brilliant world of Pandora and all its creatures to life.
Some of Pandora's creatures are harmless, but many of them are vicious predators. Avatar's characters take on plenty of these dangerous creatures, more of which were introduced in the even better sequel Avatar: The Way of Water. Between the two films and other forms of extended Pandoran lore, the most powerful creatures on the moon planet can be reasonably ranked from least to most deadly.
10 Ikranay
The Ikranay, or forest banshee, is the smaller cousin of the Ikran, or mountain banshee. The Ikranay is a bird-like creature with four wings and a set of obsidian-like teeth. They live in the canopies of Pandora's forests, hunting smaller aerial creatures to sustain themselves. These Avatar creatures are extremely fast and dangerous, and though they are not as deadly as their mountainous cousins, they are not to be trifled with.
9 Ikran
The Ikran, or mountain banshee, is an extremely powerful aerial creature, known for bonding with the Na'vi in the first Avatar movie. The Na'vi use these dragon-like creatures for traveling long distances and often ride them to war. The Ikran are deadly predators with nasty attitudes. The Na'vi who want to ride one must tame it without dying first, which is no easy task. They have extremely sharp razor-like teeth and powerful wings and legs. They reside high in the mountainous regions of Pandora, and few creatures can threaten them.
8 Slinth
Slinths are deadly land-bound creatures in Avatar, similar to Viperwolves. They have powerful jaws full of razor-like teeth and hard retractable plates that protect their heads. They are among the fastest land creatures on Pandora, and while they may not be the most dangerous creatures in the Pandoran forests, they are not to be messed with. They are aggressive predators, and though not the largest forest hunters, they are big enough to constitute a formidable threat.
7 Nantang
The Nantang, or Viperwolf, is a step above the Slinth. They are powerful wolf-like creatures with six legs and wicked teeth and claws. They have evolved to travel long distances and very few creatures are willing to confront them. While Ikran will sometimes attempt to hunt these creatures, the Nantang comes out on top as often as not. Moreover, they often travel in packs, making them even more dangerous to encounter. The Nantang also has opposable thumbs that allow them to climb trees and hunt their prey from above. If they were a bit larger, they would likely crack the top five of this ranking.
6 Angtsik
The Angtsik, or Hammerhead Titanothere, is a massive Pandoran herbivore that resides in the forests of the moon planet. While they are not natural predators, Angtsiks are fearsome adversaries when riled. Their sheer size makes them highly dangerous, not to mention their massive hammer-shaped skulls that can knock trees out of the ground. Jake Sully encounters one in Avatar, and he would have been killed by it had he attacked. Luckily, Grace warns him not to attack it, and he escapes unscathed. These gargantuan creatures are capable of large-scale destruction, but their peaceful nature prevents them from ranking higher.
5 Slinger
The Slinger, or lanay'ka, is another forest predator, somewhat similar to a mantis in its anatomy. They are massive creatures, reaching over two meters in height, and their speed makes them difficult to escape. They have four back legs and two arm-like limbs in the front of their bodies shaped like pincers. They also have sharp snouts and wing-like attachments to their head that allow them to strike with great speed and force. They are easily one of the top five most powerful creatures on Pandora.
4 Nalutsa
The Nalutsa is a massive shark-like creature that lives in the coastal waters of Pandora. As far as sea creatures go, these are some of the most dangerous that can be encountered in the Avatar movies. They can grow to 40 meters in length and have teeth the size of swords. They are a hyper-carnivorous species, and were it not for their even more dangerous cousins, they might be the most powerful creatures in all of Pandora's oceans. It's possible they will appear again when Avatar 3 releases, but it would be best for the Sully family to avoid these terrible creatures if they do reappear.
3 Great Leonopteryx
The Great Lenopteryx, also known as the Toruk, is the apex aerial predator of Pandora. They are similar to mountain banshees, just much larger and more vicious. The Toruk reaches 25–30 meters in length, and their massive jaws can crush just about anything. They fly with incredible speed and have no fear of any other creature on Pandora. The Na'vi hold the Toruk in esteem, giving it a central place in their cultural lore. The Na'vi both fear and respect these creatures, emphasizing how powerful they are. Notably, Jake Sully's Toruk helps the Na'vi defeat the humans in Avatar.
2 Akula
In the Avatar franchise, the Akula is the more elusive and aggressive cousin of the Nalutsa. They are often compared to Earth's great white sharks, and they occupy the same niche as the great white shark, meaning no creature is stupid enough to attack an Akula. They can swim at incredible speeds, and once they reach their prey, death is certain. Their three-part jaws allow them to extend their mouths in a manner similar to a snake, allowing them to take on the largest prey. The Akula is easily the most dangerous creature in the waters of Pandora.
1 Thanator
The Thanator, or Palulukan, is the apex predator of the Pandoran forest. They have six legs and their bodies are shaped like a panther or lion. There is nothing on Pandora stupid enough to go near one of these vicious creatures. Even the Na'vi refuse to go near them, knowing certain death awaits any creature that encroaches on their territory. Their massive claws and teeth combined with their incredible land speed and armored tails make them capable of killing just about anything. They also have extremely keen senses, strong enough to detect prey up to 13 kilometers away. They are, so far, the most powerful creatures in Avatar.
