After The Avengers proved to be a hit, grossing a stunning $1.5 billion in the global box office.
Since then, the MCU has gone from strength to strength. This year's Avengers: Endgame is the end of what Marvel calls the Infinity Saga - the 11-year-long narrative that ultimately sees the Avengers go up against Thanos, the Mad Titan. It's a bittersweet moment for fans, with several major figures in the MCU bowing out, and it prepares the way for Marvel's mysterious Phase 4.
But that doesn't necessarily mean that Avengers: Endgame is the end of the Avengers franchise. In the comics, although there's usually been a core team, the Avengers roster has been shaken up time and again. That means there's absolutely no reason Marvel couldn't make Avengers 5.
Avengers 5 Is Not Confirmed (Yet)
Marvel is keeping silent about their future plans, preferring viewers to focus on the end of MCU Phase 3. In fact, Marvel producer Kevin Feige has recently said he feels that strategy backfired, because it meant audiences thought of films as stepping-stones to an ultimate destination rather than appreciating each movie in its own way.
Thus, if there is an Avengers 5, then, it probably won't be confirmed for quite some time. Last year Disney CEO Bob Iger did suggest Avengers 5 shouldn't simply be ruled out, though. "Given the popularity of the characters and given the popularity of the franchise," he observed, "I don't think people should conclude there will never be another Avengers movie."
There have been Young Avengers. If either of these projects do materialize, then they will be smart subversions of the Avengers brand; the Dark Avengers were a brutal team formed by Norman Osborn who were secretly all super-villains; the Young Avengers were a group of teenage heroes loosely inspired by the adults. It would be typical of Marvel to decide to transform and evolve their most successful brand for the future.
Avengers 5 Possible Release Date
So far, every phase of the MCU has had an Avengers film towards the tail-end, and each phase typically lasts between three and four years. Taking that and the production slate of movies ahead, that means the earliest audiences can expect Avengers 5 is really sometime around 2023 or 2024. It wouldn't be a surprise if Marvel held it off for a while, in order to let the brand's power continue to grow before any announcement.
What Other Marvel Movies Are On The Way?
At this stage, the only officially-announced Marvel project is Spider-Man: Far From Home, which Shang-Chi. Marvel is currently refusing to confirm any of these reports.
