Should You Kill Captain Aelfyr In Avowed?

By the time you meet her during the mainline quest, A Path to the Garden, Captain Aelfyr may have done plenty in Avowed that makes her worth killing. If you are unable to stop the Steel Garrote in time, the fanatical group will burn down Fior mes Iverno. As a key figure in the plan, Aelfyr led its execution and took great pleasure in it.

As you will have Giatta will you at this point, she is craving justice for her fallen city herself. On the other hand, Aelfyr makes for a very challenging boss battle depending on your difficulty. In return for taking the challenge on, however, you will be rewarded with a decent piece of gear from the list of unique armor available in Avowed.

Should You Kill Captain Aelfyr?

In Exchange For The Death Knight Gloves

If you want to get as much unique gear as possible, you should kill Captain Aelfyr in Avowed. Not only did I find this a very satisfactory kill in avenging Fior mes Iverno, but this is also the only way to get her Death Knight Gloves. Pairing well with some of the best armor in the game, the Death Knight Gloves has the following stats and effects:

Item Bonus: -10% Stamina cost while Blocking
Rymgrand's Touch: +15% Frost Damage

If you are a keen of ice-based magic like the Blizzard spell, this is a good piece of equipment for Wizard builds in Avowed. Because Captain Aelfyr is a high-level boss with other Steel Garrote soldiers on her side, you may need to lower the game's difficulty if you're under-leveled. Altogether, I found getting this handy piece of gear more than worth it.

Getting Inquisitor Lodwyn's Missive in Avowed from Captain Aelfyr

If you decide to spare Captain Aelfyr at this point in Avowed, you will simply be free to walk through the gate to Shatterscarp without a fight. You will also still have Inquisitor Lodwyn's Missive given to you to take away. Later in the game, however, she will reappear as an enemy in the Galawain's Tusks region. Killing Captain Aelfyr & her soldiers will also grant an extra 326 XP. While you'll have the chance to earn more later on, it's more important to get XP earlier in the game to unlock more abilities to buff your Avowed build.

You will have another chance to fight here again there. When you win, she will still have the Death Knight Gloves for you to loot. Altogether, it is still better to kill Captain Aelfyr earlier in A Path to the Garden, since you can make use of this exclusive gear reward much sooner in your Avowed playthrough.
