Although three A Quiet Place movies currently released and a highly anticipated sequel on the way. When the series first premiered in 2018, its central storytelling device felt genuinely groundbreaking. It was hard to fathom a horror movie where the characters had to stay quiet to survive. Now, however, another apocalyptic horror movie has sured the franchise.
Released in March 2024, Azrael is a horror action movie starring Samara Weaving. The movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a cult of mute fanatics are in power. When a woman named Azrael escapes from their clutches, she must ensure that she stays as silent as her captors to stay alive. The movie earned a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics applauding the project for its violent gore and bloodiness. Weaving also received many nods for her striking performance, which was not only intense and action-packed but also completely silent. Naturally, this has invited multiple comparisons with A Quiet Place.
Azrael Does Dialogue Free Horror Better Than A Quiet Place
How A Quiet Place Breaks Its Premise
Ultimately, Azrael outshines A Quiet Place when it comes to the concept of a silent horror movie. From start to finish, Azrael truly commits to the idea of having no dialogue in the film. In some ways, this makes the movie more vague and perhaps confusing to some. However, it also makes the film rely on its visuals and its performances, which ended up being impressively powerful. Using no dialogue in a movie is most definitely a challenge, but Azrael rises to the occasion in a way that A Quiet Place never did.

Although A Quiet Place has always marketed itself based on the idea of having to stay quiet, its characters have always had dialogue throughout the movies. Even in the first film, when the Abbott family are truly in the midst of the apocalypse, the characters end up speaking to each other. This is extra frustrating because they know sign language, which could have completely eliminated the need for them to speak. Yet, A Quiet Place has consistently broken its own rules. This doesn't make the franchise bad by any means, but it lessens the effect of the movie's premise.
Azrael Is The Silent Horror Movie A Quiet Place Still Hasn't Made
Why A Quiet Place Will Never Make A Truly Silent Movie
Ultimately, Azrael has succeeded where A Quiet Place has consistently failed. The Samara Weaving movie committed wholeheartedly to its premise – a bold decision that strengthened Azrael as a whole. A Quiet Place is definitely financially and critically lauded, but it is undeniable that the movies have never truly stuck to their promise of being silent. In fact, it seems like the franchise will never make a fully quiet movie, given the direction of the follow-ups.
Now that the world is expanding, dialogue is necessary for explaining certain things and building connections between characters.
Now that A Quiet Place has grown into a film series, it seems less likely that they will come out with a truly silent film. The latest installment in the franchise, A Quiet Place: Day One, had the most sound yet. In some ways, it makes sense. The franchise is playing with sound and story. Now that the world is expanding, dialogue is necessary for explaining certain things and building connections between characters. Yet, as understandable as the decision is, it will always be unfortunate that A Quiet Place never lived fully lived up to its thrilling premise.
