Summary

  • Patch 7 promises to make Dark Urge playthroughs in Baldur's Gate 3 even more evil with new bug fixes and adjustments.
  • Alfira may temporarily as a companion, adding more emotional weight to her potential fate.
  • Larian Studios teases more evil endings and improved companion reactions for a better Dark Urge experience.

It's almost impossible to walk away from Baldur's Gate 3 after just one playthrough, especially not with all the different morality options players have to pick from as they play. The Dark Urge Origin character is one most players will learn little about on a regular playthrough, but selecting this option opens the gates for a variety of different cutscenes and experiences. But those who haven't dug into an evil playthrough yet should hold off starting one.

In September, developer Larian Studios will release another big patch for BG3, introducing a whole host of bug fixes as well as additions to the Dark Urge character. While the Origin character is a particularly popular one that's already deserving of its own playthrough, players have taken issue with some of the content and cutscenes, noting that it still feels like there's something missing. Patch 7 may be worth the wait for those considering an evil playthrough.

Patch 7 Is Bound To Make The Dark Urge Playthrough More Evil

Alfira's Temporary Companion Status Will Make Her Death Hit Harder

Baldur's Gate 3 Alfira The Bard Speaking Inside Last Light Inn

In the post from Larian Studios on Steam unveiling some of the details payers will see in the patch release, the developer teased the much-requested addition of Alfira as a companion. "We may have also let a certain bard now the party as a controllable character if there’s an empty slot, temporarily, of course," the patch notes read. Players have been rooting for Alfira, the bard introduced at the Emerald Grove, to be a party member for some time now. But while this tease seems like a great addition, it's actually a bittersweet change.

Alfira's temporary companionship was mentioned under the Dark Urge bug fixes, indicating that the bard may only be able to temporarily the party if the player is doing a Dark Urge playthrough. The Bhaal spawn's interactions with Alfira are some of the guaranteed casualty in a Dark Urge playthrough (though there are some workarounds), making her temporary addition to the party a pretty cruel move on Larian Studios's part – but all the more evil.

Larian Studios Teased More Evil Endings In Patch 7

Teasers Showed Dramatic, Never-Before-Seen Evil Cutscenes

Though the Dark Urge Origin character is one that seems to have a lot of additional thought put into it (making it seem like it's the intended main character for BG3), there are also quite a few moments and cutscenes that feel lackluster to players. Companions don't react as one would think they should to some of the more evil deeds the Dark Urge commits in a playthrough, and the character's redemption arc is a clear example of this. Even if the player chooses to reject Bhaal and have Withers resurrect them before going into the final battle, party ' reactions are disappointing and make the moment feel like a bit of a let-down.

But Patch 7 will see many of those issues resolved, with new bug fixes and other adjustments to the evil character. The developer has promised companions will be given new reactions to the Dark Urge's deeds, hopefully rectifying this unsatisfactory feature. Larian Studios also teased more evil endings, showcasing the Dark Urge lying on the ground among dead bodies, as well as levitating in front of an army of people with spears gathered in front of the gallows. The Dark Urge is known to have some particularly disturbing and evil cutscenes, but waiting for Patch 7 will give players a chance to experience something new.

Though it may be tempting to dive into a Dark Urge playthrough (especially for those who haven't done one yet), those looking to wreak havoc in Baldur's Gate 3 should hold off on their evil playthrough until the new patch releases in September. Though there's already plenty of content for an evil playthrough, if Larian delivers on its promises, there's bound to be plenty of additional content that will make waiting worth it.
