Alejandro González Iñárritu, director of 2015's Babel. With the receipt of his Oscar for Best Director for The Revenant, Iñárritu became the first director in 65 years, and only the third ever, to win the award in two consecutive years following his win with Birdman. Continuing from that success is Iñárritu's first feature film since 2015, Bardo.

As reported by IndieWire, Iñárritu has now finished shooting Bardo. Production wrapped up in Mexico City, but a release date has yet to be confirmed. Iñárritu returned to his hometown of Mexico City to shoot what is being referred to as "a nostalgic comedy set against an epic journey." The film stars Daniel Jimenez Cacho and Griselda Siciliani in leading roles. Co-writer and frequent collaborator, Nicolás Giacobone, teamed up with Iñárritu to write the film. The pair have previously collaborated on BiutifulBirdman, and The Revenant with Giacobone working as a producer on the latter.

Bardo is an independent production that includes cinematographer Darius Khondji, production designer Eugenio Caballero and costume designer Anna Terrazas as part of the crew. The synopsis, as revealed in an official press release can be read below:

Written by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Nicolás Giacobone, ‘Bardo’ is a nostalgic comedy set against an epic journey. A chronicle of uncertainties where the main character, a renowned Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker, returns to his native country facing his identity, familial relationships, the folly of his memories as well as the past and new reality of his country.
