As the Flash of the future, Impulse has had the weight of the world on his shoulders and many people to impress on his difficult journey to inherit the mantle. He's come a long way since his debut, which portrayed him as a brash and impulsive speedster with no regard for his or others safety. As a fun-loving but spontaneous hero, Bart Allen had to learn his lessons the hard way, and ultimately was forced to realize he had a lot of work to do before he could become the next Flash.

For many heroes there is one defining moment in their life that helps them become the superhero that many people look up to. Bart Allen's defining moment was a product of his own making, one caused by months of neglecting his duties. It was a tragedy and a huge sacrifice that he would never be able to live down, but it was the push he needed to get his head out of the sand and start becoming someone worthy of his future mantle.

It isn't until the end of the fight that Bart is forced to see how his behavior is too wild for what they do. When fellow speedster Johnny Quick dies during the fight, it makes Impulse see that there are real consequences for superheroes' actions and that he needs to take this job more seriously.

Eventually Bart is able to move on to new adventures with his cousin Jenni and his mentor Max. In Impulse #12 he is able to find a situation that is perfect for goofing off when he performs a song for his school during a dance. Since he is now able to distinguish what situations call for what reaction, he is a massive hit when he does get the chance to truly goof off. With a head as big as his hair, Impulse's defining moments and attitude are truly what set him apart from other speedsters. As a kid, he has a lot to learn, but even after the worst tragedy he still finds comfort in his best friends.

Throughout everything, Impulse learns many hard lessons about what it means to be a hero. He learns how to work with a team, how to act in serious situations, and when he can go out and have fun with his friends. With all those lessons combined, Impulse will one day make the best Flash, worthy of the title bestowed upon him in his time.
