Iconic Marvel Comics' editor Tom Brevoort had some wild things to say about DC's Absolute line has been a major hit, but Brevoort took to social media with some posts that are raising a lot of eyebrows.

On Bluesky, Brevoort opened up a major dialogue with a post that asked if Batman was cratering due to the success of the wildly popular Absolute Batman. Brevoort even asked if the mainline series should bring Martha Wayne back to life, much like she is in the Absolute title.

Brevoort clarified that her presence is an element that's wildly different from the main Batman series, much like how Peter and Mary Jane are married in Ultimate Spider-Man, but not in Amazing Spider-Man. Brevoort used that analogy to cast doubt on fans who believed the marriage led to Ultimate Spider-Man's success.

Absolute Batman's Success Can't Be Simplified Down to One Thing

Absolute Batman #7 main cover feature

Marvel and DC have always taken pages out of each other's books and, right now, both publishers have new lines of comics with different takes on their iconic heroes. Marvel rebooted its Ultimate line, which rebooted its modernized characters fighting back in a world where the maker has influenced its history. Around the same time, DC Comics created the Absolute line, featuring a world created by Darkseid, where underdog heroes face greater challenges than ever. Both lines have found wild success, with Ultimate Spider-Man and Absolute Batman being two of the most consistently best-selling titles for the last few months.

To be clear, Brevoort is trying to make a point to Spider-Man fans who believe that Ultimate Spider-Man is a success because Peter and MJ are married, saying no one would credit Martha's presence in Absolute Batman for its success. But the reason both of these comics have become hits with their respective readerships is because they offer fans new, exciting directions and are able to take chances that the main titles aren't. And while Batman is indeed trailing behind Absolute Batman in sales, that's less of a mark against the former and more of an achievement for the latter.

What Can DC Learn From Its New Dark Knight's Sales?

Absolute Batman with Cape Extended DC

While Brevoort's only cause for bringing up the state of Batman was to make a point to Spider-Man fans, it is important to look at what Absolute Batman's success means for the Caped Crusader. DC Comics has clearly struck a chord with fans while the main Batman appears to be lagging a bit. But the main series is about to start up with the "Hush 2" storyline and Matt Fraction will be ing the title later this year. Meanwhile, Absolute Batman is doing the job it needs to be doing: Telling an experimental Batman tale that gives fans something exciting.

While Brevoort's comments about Batman and Absolute Batman were not the target of his posts, his words do invite fans to take a hard look at what's working with the new Batman title and what DC should be doing with its main Batman series. That's not to say it needs to bulk the Prime Batman up, but maybe take a more experimental approach like what Absolute Batman is doing. While Batman is far from 'cratering', there's always room for improvement.
