DC is reuniting Superman in the new year as Batman/Superman: World's Finest #1 will begin a new series starring DC Comics' top two heroes. The pair have already been very busy within DC's Infinite Frontier initiative, and now it looks like they're only going to get busier.
In the past, Batman and Superman have frequently made for one of DC's most exciting team-ups and 2022 will be no exception. The last issue of the previous Batman/Superman series released in September, but the Dark Knight and Man of Steel could not be kept apart for long. In March they will be teaming up once more, as Superman will need Batman's help in a big way.
Details about this new series have been shared by the Batman/Superman covers here:
The Dark Knight. The Man of Steel. They are the two finest superheroes that the world has ever known...and they're together again in an epic new series from the legendary talents of Mark Waid and Dan Mora!
In the not-too-distant past, Superman's powers are super-charged from a devastating chemical attack by the villain Metallo ... and the only ally that the ultra-powerful Man of Tomorrow can turn to in this turbulent hour is Gotham's own dark vengeance: the Batman. A nearly fatal burst of power drives Bruce Wayne to his own extreme measures to help his friend ... enlisting none other than the Doom Patrol for aid.
It's the world's greatest superheroes from the world's greatest comic book talent in an epic comic book experience that kicks off the next big events in the DCU. Get ready, it's time to soar.
Judging by the synopsis, this new series could introduce some pretty significant changes for the DC Comics universe. Superman has dealt with being overpowered before, but he doesn't usually have to call in so much back-up to handle the situation. The Doom Patrol has recently been featured within its own TV show, but in comics, fans haven't seen them for a little while. They haven't made a full appearance within Infinite Frontier yet, so this could very well be their debut for the new era. The variant artwork for the first issue also introduces a lot of fun elements.
Shaner's cover appears to be an homage to World's Finest Comics #21 from 1946, which features Batman and Superman reaching for a basketball - though the two heroes are now reaching for the Earth in this new variant. It would certainly be fitting since these are the World's Finest heroes and they've been a team for a long team. Lee Weeks' variant cover features Cyborg Superman facing off with Azrael in his iconic batsuit. If this battle comes to fruition, it will certainly be an explosive one worth looking forward to.
The main cover from Dan Mora, meanwhile, reveals the usual cast of ing characters from the Gotham City Police Department and the Daily Planet, as well as classic villains, including Brainiac, Lex Luthor, Joker, Bane, and Catwoman. Batman/Superman: World's Finest #1 will release March 15.
