Here's what happened in the ending of released exclusively on Paramount+. In the movie, viewers discover the "Smart" Beavis and the "Smart" Butt-Head, as well as a society of multiversal Beavis and Butt-Head variants that didn't previously exist in the Beavis and Butt-Head canon. These two "Smart" characters are multiversal travelers from another universe who find their way to Earth's Highland Texas. They try to save their own reality by transporting Beavis and Butt-Head through a portal that would take them through space and time to a citadel of Beavis and Butt-Head variants. The variants all gather around a ceremonial chamber to witness the first of their kind to "score. "Scoring," in this case, means to have sex with someone, as up until now, every iteration of Beavis and Butt-Head have been virgins.
In fact, the plot of Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe is driven by the characters' desire to "score." After setting fire to their school's science fair, Beavis and Butt-Head are sentenced to court-mandated space camp. At the camp, they meet astronaut Serena, the antagonist/love interest for the film.
Due to some poorly worded training advice, Beavis and Butt-Head are led to believe they will "score" with her. They spend 18 hours inserting a mechanical phallic device into a hole and are quickly recruited to a space mission to observe a black hole, which, of course, they eventually end up getting sucked into. They then land in 2022, where they meet their "Smart" variants.
How Beavis And Butt-Head's Comedy Works In 2022
Beavis and Butt-Head's humor has not changed one bit, which is refreshing. Because of this, the movie is mostly childish, dumb humor which is nostalgic for those who grew up with it. One particular scene where Beavis and Butt-Head walk into a college Gender Studies course rings true when they learn about white privilege and then immediately go out exercising it, which ends with them in jail. Beavis spouts the line "we're subverting existing paradigms" while stealing a whole cake, taking one bite, then throwing it in the trash before smacking a map out of someone's hands.
Their humor really holds up in 2022 due to its blunt and ironic portrayal of the worst possible behavior, juxtaposed with rational characters who unwittingly inspire them to act terribly. The modernization of Beavis and Butt-Head's humor likely gave way to making the story more high-concept to keep up with what most movies deliver these days.
What Happens At The End Of Beavis & Butt-Head Do The Universe?
In the end, Beavis and Butt-Head "defeat" the movie's antagonist by showing that they're not evil geniuses who have been after her for over two decades, but just two dumb teenagers. Serena then asks what it will take to keep them quiet, as she would be wanted for attempted murder if they talked to the authorities.
After no deliberation, Butt-Head says "uh, we wanna score?" And while she considers it, the "Smart" Beavis makes a speech that seduces Serena, and the three of them (the "Smart" Beavis and Butt-Head, along with Serena) go through a portal to the "Smart" pair's home world. As Beavis says in their outro, "It wasn't me, but somewhere out there, there's a Beavis who scored." This solidifies the fact that not only are Beavis and Butt-Head virgins in canon but so are every version of them, except for the "Smart" ones.
Every Variant In Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe
After finally "scoring," the "Smart" Beavis and "Smart" Butt-Head walk into the citadel to uproarious applause from the crowd. After receiving medals from king and queen Beavis and Butt-Head variants (Beavis for "scoring" and Butt-Head for "watching"), a shot of the citadel is shown, where seemingly endless versions of Beavis and Butt-Head exist.
The crowd shot also features two wizard variants, a cowboy variant of each, two variants with butt cheeks for foreheads, two mushroom variants, variants with their faces swapped, two merman variants, founding father variants with powdered wigs, two fairy variants, Chippendale variants, two French mime variants, muscular cyberpunk variants, two hipster variants, two variants with noses on their foreheads, two Star Trek variants, two variants with ventriloquist dummies of themselves, two variants from Hell, two enthusiastic bald variants, singularity variants with post-human bodies, a T-100 variant with a John Connor variant, and various different alien variants from throughout their multiverse.
This is by far the most world-building that audiences have ever seen from a Beavis and Butt-Head romp, as well as the most out-there ending. Given that there is a multiverse in play now, though, it is possible for the two to return in many ways, not just as themselves. Hopefully, this breathes some life into what has been a relatively dead property, to the point where people can expect something other than just Beavis and Butt-Head Mr. Magooing their way through life. There's a rich, hilarious, and varied universe when it comes to Beavis and Butt-Head now, and audiences are all the better off for it.
How Do The Universe Sets Up The New Beavis And Butt-Head Series
Toward the end of the film, "Smart" Beavis and Butt-Head show the originals what their life would have looked like if they never went through the black hole. An aging Beavis and Butt-Head are shown where their couch used to be, with Beavis sitting on a chair, and Butt-Head sitting on his rascal scooter. Beavis has glasses and is holding a can of beer.
In 2022, Mike Judge posted drawings of these two versions of the pair. This Easter egg would lead viewers to believe they will get a grown-up Beavis and Butt-Head in the new episodes coming later this year. When that happens, it is logical to assume, then, that viewers will be watching a show about two Beavis and Butt-Head variants, not necessarily the prime Beavis and Butt-Head that everyone has grown to know and love. It may be a mix of the two, but Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe sets up the possibility of not only the older version of the pair starring in the show but also the other variants that are shown in the ending's medal ceremony scene.
The end of Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe isn't exactly a head-scratcher, but the genius of the movie lies in the simplicity of the execution. Throwing two completely dimwitted teens from the late 1990s into 2022 seems to do the trick for anyone looking for commentary on today's society. They are unimpeachably always going to do the most horrible things that they can, given the information they are provided with, which is par for the course for what you can expect from people in 2022. In the end, Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe shows audiences that, while much has changed since 1998, not much needs to be altered in order for an older franchise to hold up to modern times.
