to fire Bosun Wihan Du Toit. Wihan’s behavior had been declining all season, with his offenses escalating from incompetence to toxicity to misogyny. His clash with Chief Stew Lara Rigby created unbearable tension between the interior and exterior departments. Later, Wihan’s negativity trickled down into his department, sending chaos through the deck team.

The situation spiraled out of control when Deckhand Johnny Arvanitis had a violent outburst after discovering Wihan in bed with his onboard love interest, Sous Chef Alesia Harris. Johnny was terminated, but the incident led Captain Jason to take a hard look at Wihan’s behavior. Once Captain Jason decided to fire Wihan, I could practically feel the relief setting in among the crew. Wihan appeared blindsided by his termination, which confirmed my suspicion that he was unqualified for the role.

Wihan Wasn't Leading His Team Properly

He Had A Complete Lack Of ability

Wihan’s biggest red flag was his inability to control the deck team. He refused to take ability for the department’s failures, blaming his deckhands when things went wrong instead of acknowledging that he was responsible for their success. Wihan was often unclear in his orders and never checked the quality of his team’s work himself. Even worse, he was often taking breaks or flirting with his coworkers during his shifts.

As Wihan faced questions about his leadership, his energy became increasingly negative. He started speaking down to his coworkers, telling Lara to “shut up” and unleashing a tirade at Harry that left him in tears. While Johnny stood by Wihan, he itted he was wary of Wihan’s flirtatious nature. This set off Johnny’s explosive reaction to catching Alesia and Wihan together, and I’m convinced the situation would've escalated if Wihan were more trustworthy.

Wihan Was A Nuisance To The Other Teams On Board

He Clashed With The Other Department Heads

While Wihan’s incompetence left the deck team shattered, his toxicity had a ripple effect across the entire ship. Lara had previously complained that Wihan’s careless mistakes in front of guests made the crew look bad, forcing her to step in. But Wihan shrugged off Lara’s advice, which I believe unfairly contributed to her already high stress and workload.

As Captain Jason pondered how to handle Wihan, his interviews with the rest of the crew convinced me he had no choice but to fire him. Lara, Harry, and Chef Tzarina Mace-Ralph voiced their concerns about Wihan to the captain, proving how widespread the chaos was. I was most shocked by Deck/Stew Adair Werley, who agreed Wihan needed to go despite the two being in a boatmance. It’s obvious everybody on board was fed up with Wihan, and none were disappointed to see him leave.

If Jason Didn't Fire Wihan, The Season May Have Ended Terribly

Wihan Was Bringing The Entire Crew Down

As Captain Jason stated, “an undercurrent of negativity” within a confined space like a yacht is an “infection” that spreads rapidly. Wihan’s disrespect for his crewmates was unprofessional, and it had a devastating effect on the ship’s environment. He disrupted Lara’s sense of order, chipped away at the confidence of his team, and hopped between nearly all the women on board.

It seemed Captain Jason had been in denial about the deteriorating situation, but once Wihan’s behavior was brought to light, the solution was clear. Wihan’s departure finally allows the crew a chance at cohesion. Now that Wihan is out of the picture, Below Deck Down Under season 3 is already more enjoyable, and I’m looking forward to watching the crew pick up the pieces and move on.
