Griffith and Guts had a somewhat amicable relationship as fellow comrades, until Griffith committed many atrocities to transform into a demonic being known as Femto. Griffith also violated Guts' loved one, Caska, plunging her into madness. From that point, Guts embarks on a nightmare voyage to bring Caska to safety in the land of the elves, fending off the demonic Apostles every night.
Berserk's grim tone famously shifted towards a more classic Fantasy at one point, and this coincided with the introduction of Schierke, a young witch who s the Black Swordsman Party and becomes an ally of Guts, helping him and his companions reach Elfhelm.
