With an original run that began in 2001, Takeshi Konomi's The Prince of Tennis breaks from the more typical trope within the sports genre of the underdog rising to the top and instead revolves around a young tennis prodigy. The protagonist, Ryoma Echizen, is enrolled by his father into Seishun Academy, a school renowned for its tennis club, which has returned to high-level competition only recently.
