When the Better Call Saul first started airing, it was assumed that the show would be more overtly comedic than its predecessor as its protagonist was known for providing comic relief. However, the spin-off has proven to be just as dramatic as Breaking Bad ever was.
If anything, the inevitable downfall of Jimmy McGill and later Saul Goodman leans more heavily on the elements of a tragedy than the saga of Walter White did. But of course, Better Call Saul still has plenty of humor. So, here are the 10 funniest moments from the fifth and most recent season of Better Call Saul.
Jimmy And Mike’s New Threads
In the season’s penultimate installment, “Bad Choice Road,” Jimmy and Mike returned from their odyssey in the desert and bought some new clothes. Jimmy wears a tacky shirt bearing the American flag and Mike wears one with the “Land of Enchantment” banner.
It feels like a reference to the shirts that Jules and Vincent are given in “The Bonnie Situation” segment of Pulp Fiction, which make them look like “a couple of dorks.”
Kim Laughs At Howard
When Howard came to Kim with the revelation that Jimmy had thrown bowling balls at his car and sent prostitutes to his lunch with Cliff Main, he was expecting her to leave Jimmy and thank him for saving her.
But instead, she just burst into a fit of hysterical laughter. She’s known Slippin’ Jimmy — and Saul Goodman — to do far more diabolical things than destroying a car and ruining a meal.
Ron And Sticky’s Drug-Fueled Bender
When Saul Goodman announced his 50% discount for non-violent felonies, drug enthusiasts Ron and Sticky got excited that the discount was “almost half” and went on a drug-fueled bender. Along the way, they stole a garden gnome and crashed their car on a front lawn on a quiet suburban street.
The Gunman Crashes His Car After He Dies
At the climax of “Bagman,” easily season 5’s most action-packed episode, Mike manages to kill the one gunman who got away, saving himself and Jimmy from being shot and left for dead in the barren desert. But Mike kills the guy in such a way that makes him lose control of the wheel.
The car rolls over, leaving it undrivable. It could’ve been an easy getaway for Jimmy and Mike. Their sense of victory is quickly dashed as they continue walking through the desert.
“You Didn’t Think I’d Find Your Ultra-Secret Batcave?”
In the season 5 finale, when Jimmy was worried about his situation with Lalo, and Mike wasn’t giving him any information, he drove over to Mike’s house and started banging on the door.
He yelled, “Open this door! I want to talk to you! What, you didn’t think I’d find your ultra-secret Batcave?” Meanwhile, Mike was parking his car on the sidewalk and getting out with some bags of groceries behind him. He wasn’t even in the house.
Kim And Jimmy Discuss Plots Against Howard
When Kim told Jimmy that Howard told her about the hookers and the bowling balls, she asked him what the next plot against Howard would be. So, they started talking about it over dinner and they were still talking about it in bed later that night.
Their ridiculous schemes included replacing his suntan lotion with sunblock and sneaking a chemical into his shampoo at the country club that would make him lose his hair.
Jimmy Drinks His Own Urine
At the beginning of “Bagman,” when Jimmy was waiting for the Cousins to arrive with Lalo’s bail money, he poured out some of his water to clean his shoe. As soon as that happened, the writing was on the wall that eventually, Jimmy would be in desperate need of hydration. Shortly after, he found himself stranded in the desert with Mike, with no drinking water.
Jimmy peed into his water bottle and eventually succumbed to the exhaustion and drank his own urine. The fact that the pee-filled water bottle had the Davis & Main logo on it was the icing on the visual comedy cake.
The Lookalike Defendant
In one of Saul Goodman’s greatest all-time gambits, he asked a convenience store clerk to confirm that the man sitting next to him in the courtroom is the man who robbed his store.
And then, he revealed that the man sitting with him wasn’t actually his defendant. He was just a lookalike, and the real defendant was sitting in the gallery. The judge was disappointed, but it got Jimmy a mistrial verdict.
Jimmy Sends Hookers To Howard’s Business Lunch
After throwing bowling balls at Howard’s car, Jimmy hadn’t quite scratched the itch that Howard’s patronizing job offer gave him. So, after getting two prostitute clients off the hook, he pays them for their time and sends them into a restaurant where Howard is having lunch with Cliff Main.
Patrick Fabian and Ed Begley Jr.’s reactions are priceless, while Jimmy’s commentary from the car as he watches through binoculars gives a hilarious additional perspective of the scene.
“Yup!”
When Jimmy pulled “the ol’ switcheroo” on Kim in “Wexler v. Goodman,” the Mesa Verde team was furious. In particular, Jimmy angered Kevin by using footage of Kevin Watchell's father from old Mesa Verde ads to smear his company.
It seemed obvious that Jimmy was going to disregard Kim’s request to cancel the gambit, but it wasn’t exactly clear what he was planning. Despite the uncomfortable position Kim was put in, there was a definite satisfaction in seeing Mesa Verde brought to its knees in the most brazen way possible.
