Limited Run Games has announced pre-orders for Bill & Ted's Excellent Retro Collection on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5. The collection contains Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure on the NES and Bill & Ted's Excellent Game Boy Adventure A Bogus Journey on the Game Boy.
The original Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure movie launched at the tail end of the '80s, at the start of the movie-video game adaptation era. Surprisingly, there were only a few Bill & Ted games produced, despite the franchise's time-traveling concept being a good fit for the video game format. Many '80s films have received games in the modern era, including Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Friday the 13th, and Robocop. Because of this, a Bill & Ted game in the Telltale style could be a fun addition to the series, especially after a new Bill & Ted movie released in 2020.
However, the two existing Bill & Ted games will soon be available on modern systems in a retro bundle. The official Limited Run Games specializes in physical releases, and there will be a Collector's Edition version of the game that comes with a NES-style cardboard sleeve, as well as a soundtrack.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure is an action-adventure game known for its confusing gameplay, poor controls, and ugly graphics. Bill & Ted's Excellent Game Boy Adventure A Bogus Journey is the better entry of the two, acting as a basic platformer tangentially related to the movie it's based on. Neither game is considered to be an 8-bit retro classic, but they may be a fun collector's piece for fans of the movie series.
The Bill & Ted's Excellent Retro Collection costs $34.99 to pre-order, with the Collector's Edition costing $59.99. While the collection will likely have a niche audience, it is possible the release could encourage the development of a modern Bill & Ted game, especially as Alex Winters and Cyberpunk 2077's Keanu Reeves have shown they are open to portraying the characters again. A new Bill & Ted game featuring the old and young versions of the characters would be a fun twist and could combine elements of the original films with modern graphics and a new plotline. Hopefully, Bill & Ted's Excellent Retro Collection will offer longtime fans a way to enjoy older parts of the series on modern consoles, and potentially open the door to new projects in the future.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Retro Collection pre-orders for Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5 will go live on June 9, 2022.
