Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Blue Beetle

Summary

  • Director Angel Manuel Soto has plans for a potential Blue Beetle trilogy, with hopes for two more sequels following the initial origin movie.
  • The release date for Blue Beetle 2 is uncertain, as it would depend on the success of the first film and the scheduling of other projects in the DCU slate.
  • If a sequel is greenlit, Blue Beetle 2 would answer the huge mystery set up in the mid-credits scene, introducing another DCU hero.

Following the release of the DCU's DC movie timeline.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, Blue Beetle is an origin movie in the purest sense, introducing Jaime Reyes, giving him his powers, and facing him off against villains who don't necessarily threaten the entire multiverse right away. If Blue Beetle's ending is the last we see of Jaime Reyes, it will be a missed opportunity for the DCU to broaden out its superhero base, and it will be another case of a post-credits scene mystery leading to nothing. Luckily, it seems the chances of Blue Beetle 2 (or another Blue Beetle movie at the very least) look promising.

According to Soto in an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, there are hopes for a full Blue Beetle trilogy following this initial origin movie:

"The way the machine works, the [first] movie needs to make money for them to put more money in, but for us, we've always seen it that way...We love the story so much. We believe in the product so much. We believe in an actor so much. We couldn't help but think about where his journey was going to go while we were creating this film".

James Gunn also doubled down on his comments confirming Blue Beetle is the "first DCU character" at the Blue Beetle premiere, reaffirming that Xolo Maridueña's DC superhero has a future in the DCU. Gunn posted on Instagram to say: "I can’t wait for audiences to meet Jaime Reyes, who will be an amazing part of the DCU going forward!"

So long as Blue Beetle is successful at the box office, it seems Soto does have plans for two more sequels to round out Jaime Reyes' story as a full-on trilogy. This is very exciting considering the hype for the film that's largely been generated by fans such as the online #BlueBeetleBattalion trend.

Blue Beetle 2 Predicted Release Date

At the moment, Blue Beetle 2 is still theoretical as the first movie is still proving itself at the box office. However, when and if a sequel is officially greenlit by DC Studios, a release date is harder to guess due to the full DCU slate announced by James Gunn and Peter Safran at the beginning of 2023. With over 10 different shows and movies in development for their new universe, it's hard knowing where Blue Beetle 2 could fit. However, one could imagine that if the first Blue Beetle is a massive hit, a sequel would likely be prioritized as the next DCU project after Superman: Legacy.

Blue Beetle 2 Cast: Who Can Return?

Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord in Blue Beetle

Although Blue Beetle's both villains - Susan Sarandon's Victoria Kord and Raoul Trujillo's Conrad Carapax are killed off at the end of Blue Beetle, and his father is tragically killed, it follows that the majority of Jaime Reyes' family would the cast for a potential Blue Beetle 2. This would include Jaime's Uncle Rudy (George Lopez), his younger sister Milagro (Belissa Escobedo), his mother Rocio (Elpidia Carrillo), and Jaime's Nana (Adriana Barraza). Additionally, it's very likely that Jaime's love interest Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine) would return for a sequel given the mid-credits twist, as well as Harvey Guillén's Dr. Sanchez.

The biggest Blue Beetle 2 casting question would be who could play Ted Kord, the original Blue Beetle, who is revealed to be alive in the mid-credits scene. Jason Sudeikis was heavily linked to the role (a DC casting rumor that was subsequently debunked), and would be popular. Then there's also the possibility that Booster Gold would appear in the sequel, before his own DCU project, which is so far confirmed but undated.

Blue Beetle 2 Story: How Blue Beetle Sets Up A Sequel & What Could Happen

Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes in Blue Beetle 2023

In of a story for Blue Beetle 2, Ted Kord's reappearance would no doubt form the heart of the plot. His whereabouts and what he's been doing since he disappeared, assumed dead, will likely drive everything Jaime Reyes does in the sequel. We would also no doubt see Jaime Reyes getting used to his new status quo as a superhero while also learning to get along with the alien scarab. And of course, as part of the new DCU, Blue Beetle could also start interacting with other heroes once the new DCU is up and running.

This includes Booster Gold, a superhero from the future who was best friends with Ted Kord's Blue Beetle (though he has worked with Jaime before) and would undoubtedly have justification to the search for Kord. Booster's also getting his own HBO Max series, so perhaps Blue Beetle could make an appearance there. So long as the first Blue Beetle does well at the box office, there are plenty of possibilities for Blue Beetle 2.
