At long last, Bocchi the Rock! has finally been greenlit for a second season. Bocchi the Rock! was one of the best anime to come out in 2022 thanks to its gorgeous animation and Bocchi’s relatability, yet despite how quickly it rose in popularity, the most that came of that was a compilation film duology, something that would be disappointing for anyone looking for a proper continuation of the story.

’s lack of a second season has been a sore spot with fans for years, but fortunately, that’s finally changed. The anime’s staff recently held another promotional event for the series, and to the surprise and joy of fans old and new, Bocchi the Rock! was finally revealed to have a second season in development, although it hasn’t been confirmed if season 2 will premiere in 2025. Nevertheless, the confirmation that Bocchi the Rock! is coming back is still great, and season 2 is bound to be just as great as season 1, if not better.

Bocchi The Rock! Season 2’s Story Explained

What To Expect From Bocchi The Rock Season 2

With Bocchi the Rock! getting a second season, that begs the question of what season 2 will be about. Going by the manga, not long after Kessoku Band’s performance at the school festival, a reporter with connections in the music industry tries to get Bocchi a record deal while telling her to ditch Kessoku Band because they’re holding her back. The entire group is insulted by that comment, of course, so in retaliation, Kessoku Band enters the Unidentified Riot, an annual contest for amateur bands so they can get their names out there and prove their worth as a band.

Any fans of Bocchi the Rock! season 1 will undoubtedly love season 2’s story. Not only does it have all the same great comedy, but there’s a far greater focus on character writing, as well, with the arc it’s set to adapt introducing many characters who will challenge Kessoku Band and the main characters, themselves, truly coming into their own through constant character development. Bocchi the Rock! season 2 will be where the anime finally grows on a narrative level to match its comedy and visuals, and for fans old and new, that will be great to see.

Why Bocchi The Rock! Season 1’s Director Isn’t Returning For Season 2

Bocchi The Rock!'s Change In Directors Explained

As exciting as Bocchi the Rock! season 2 will be, something that most people will have noticed is the change in director. While season 1 was directed by Keiichiro Saito, who’s since gone on to direct Madhouse’s Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, according to the official announcement, Keiichiro Saito will not return to direct Bocchi the Rock! season 2, with Yusuke Yamamoto taking over as director. According to an interview with Saito, he had no desire to return for season 2 since the increased focus on music would be too challenging, and as understandable as that is, it’s nonetheless disappointing.

Keiichiro Saito’s departure is certainly disappointing, but that doesn’t mean season 2 is in trouble. Yusuke Yamamoto was the assistant director for season 1 and responsible for much of the animation and storyboarding, even for the opening theme song, so as much as Bocchi the Rock!’s style was associated with Keiichiro Saito, Yusuke Yamamoto’s experience with the series makes him more than a worthy successor to his work. Whatever the case, the fact that Bocchi the Rock! is getting a second season at all is plenty worth celebrating, and hopefully, it won’t be much longer before it finally premieres.
