While it is a comedy, Netflix's BoJack Horseman often explores a lot of interesting and important themes. One of those major themes being change and how even though not everyone changes for the better, everyone has the capacity to.
Todd, BoJack's former best friend and roommate, is a perfect example of this. Over the show's 6 seasons, he's constantly evolved as he's discovered more about who he was. In a lot of ways, he's different than the person we first meet in season 1 but, at the same time, he's still the same character fans have come to love.
Changed: He's Asexual
In the earlier seasons, Todd's sexual orientation wasn't very clearly defined by the writers and when he was directly asked by Emily if he was gay, he identified he itted to not fully knowing how he identified.
After some time and self-reflection, Todd realized he was asexual and came out in "Hooray! Todd Episode!" This made him one of the few asexual characters in animation and provided representation for a part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Stayed The Same: He's Still Optimistic
One of Todd's greatest strengths as a character is his optimism. He can look at any situation and think of it in a positive way and its that knack for looking on the bright side that usually helps him get out of whatever crazy situation he gets himself into.
He demonstrates this even in the finale when he tells BoJack that he believes he'll turn himself around, a reference to the song "The Hokey Pokey," when he its that he's afraid that he'll fall back off the wagon when he's no longer in prison. It's a characteristic that most of the characters on the show lack which only makes him more unique.
Changed: He Has a Girlfriend
Soon after coming out, Todd begins dating Yolanda whom he first meets at a meeting for asexuals. After realizing that they didn't share any similar interests or hobbies and that the only thing connecting them is the fact that they are both asexual, Todd suggests they break up.
After the two split, Todd would then use an asexual dating app he created called All About That Ace to meet his new girlfriend, Maude.
Stayed The Same: He's Still Caring
Another important aspect of Todd's character is that he's extremely selfless, something that was also explored in "Hooray! Todd Episode!" with him often putting the needs of others before his own.
While, over time, he has learned to think about himself more and not let people walk all over him, he still maintains that caring nature. Even in the finale, he tells BoJack that they need to go by the beach to see the fireworks and later reveals that he noticed BoJack seemed overwhelmed at the party and thought he could use a break.
Changed: He Moved Out
In the episode "Mr. Peanutbutter's Boos", it's revealed that Todd showed up once for a Halloween party at BoJack's house and just ended up never leaving.
After spending years living in BoJack's House, he eventually thought it would be best if he moved out on his own as BoJack had repeatedly claimed he wanted. He would then move in with Princess Carolyn and would then later get an apartment with Maude after the two started dating.
Stayed The Same: His Fashion Sense
Todd's red hoodie and yellow beanie look have been a staple of the character since the beginning and it even became a hot new trend in Hollywoo during a brief period of time when Todd became a fashion icon after he accidentally walked on a runaway during the middle of a fashion show.
Aside from the occasional suit or two, Todd is rarely seen not wearing this outfit or some variation of it which makes it almost instantly recognizable.
Changed: He Reconnected With His Mom
For years, Todd struggled to forgive his mother, Helen, for kicking him out when he was a teenager in an effort to help him grow up. In season 6, Todd's stepdad, Jorge, tells him that his mother is sick and wants to see him but that she's ashamed of how she treated him.
It takes a lot of effort and a fake kidnapping but the two eventually meet with one another and slowly work towards mending their relationship.
Stayed The Same: His Wacky Ideas
Another element of Todd that makes the character special is his habit for coming up with crazy and unusual ideas. Some of the funniest being his Space Opera, cubed-shape marbles, and a gun that shoots miniature cupcakes.
Although the character has matured quite a bit he still has a wild sense of imagination with him even coming up with the idea of mech suits for babies near the end of the series.
Changed: Has a New Job
Todd has held a lot of different positions on the show, each one he's held for varying amounts of time. The end of season 6 sees him starting his new business concept, a daycare service for Princess Carolyn's management company, VIM.
Months later, at the party after Princess Carolyn's wedding, it's revealed that he's still working there so it seems that this may be a job he'll have for a while and will continue to have for the foreseeable future.
Stayed The Same: Still Friends With BoJack
BoJack and Todd have a strange relationship with the two of them referring to each other as their "best friend" on numerous occasions despite BoJack's attempts to ruin that. Over the 6 seasons, BoJack did a lot of things that hurt Todd including leaving him in prison, sleeping with Emily, and sabotaging his rock opera.
After several seasons of verbal and mental abuse from BoJack, Todd realizes that he isn't being respected or cared about which leads to a falling out between him and BoJack. But by the end of the series, while their relationship is the same as it once was, which may be for the best, it seems to be mended a bit by the finale.
