Braindead—marketed in North America as Dead Alive—is getting remastered in 4K. Released in 1992, Braindead is an integral entry in Jackson’s splatter period—his series of gory, darkly funny horror films. Along with Bad Taste (1987) and Meet the Feebles (1989), Braindead relies on prosthetics, over-the-top performances, and copious amounts of fake blood. The film centers around a plague-carrying rat-monkey who turns anyone it bites into a flesh-eating zombie.

In an interview with Beatles: Get Back. With the Beatles doc set for a Thanksgiving release, the remastered Braindead should arrive “within another year or so.” Read Jackson’s statement on Braindead below:

It would’ve been a little bit of a crappy quality for this, because all the DVDs that were out there were done back in the 1990s. So we are doing a remastering and whole digital 4K thing and it looks great. But we’ve been trying to do all that in between Beatles stuff, and that’s been put on a shelf for a while. But, hopefully, within another year or so they’ll come out remastered.

Following his splatter film period, the New Zealand director would go on to helm the critically acclaimed drama Heavenly Creatures and eventually the epic fantasy trilogies The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Though Jackson is arguably more beloved for his Tolkien adaptations, Braindead offers an illuminating preview of the director’s nascent, indulgent style of filmmaking. Now fans can look forward to watching this early example of Jackson’s filmmaking in all its eye-popping, blood-soaked 4K glory.
