he made it clear that the next set of Stormlight books likely won't see the light of day until the mid-2030s, as his next main project will be the third Mistborn series, Ghostbloods.

Thankfully, Sanderson fans won't need to wait quite as long for the new Mistborn books to reveal how the world of Scadrial reacts to the massive change in the Cosmere's balance of power. While they're still a while off, they'll be here before the next stage of The Stormlight Archive. And in his most recent Weekly Update on his YouTube channel, Sanderson had good news about his progress on Ghostbloods.

Brandon Sanderson Is Already A Third Of The Way Through The Next Mistborn Book

He Confirmed Its Status In A Weekly Update Video

While the headline detail of the latest Weekly Update on YouTube — Sanderson's new ice cream flavor at Utah's small-batch creamery, Rockwell Ice Cream — certainly sounds delicious, what's more mouth-watering is the fact that the author is already a third of the way through writing the initial draft of the first Ghostbloods book. He also threw a bone to fans of his Skyward series, which is now in the hands of his co-author Janci Patterson, announcing that the next book in that series is also about a third of the way drafted.

Brandon Sanderson seems to be planning Mistborn Era 3 with lessons from the Wax & Wayne series, and I'm excited to see the improvements.

I'll it to being a little jealous that I live too far away from Utah to get a scoop of Brandon Sanderlanche any time soon, but I'm excited to hear that Sanderson's keeping to his projected schedule for completing Ghostbloods. His output as an author has always deeply impressed me, but I've also worried that it could slow down as his career continued. Thankfully, that doesn't seem to be the case, ensuring readers get to enjoy plenty of stories by Sanderson.

This Update Is Great, But It Will Still Be A While Before Mistborn Era 3

Brandon Sanderson Is Planning To Write All 3 Books Before Releasing Them

Unfortunately, while Sanderson is on track with his plan for Mistborn: Ghostbloods, that's unlikely to translate to the books winding up in our hands any sooner. In his 2024 State of the Sanderson blog post, the author detailed his roap for his numerous projects over the next few years, and that his plan for Ghostbloods is the same as how he handled the original Mistborn trilogy: he's going to write and edit all three books before releasing any of them. See Sanderson's projected schedule, outlined in his post, below:

Brandon Sanderson's Projected Release Schedule

Book

Release

Tailored Realities

December 2025

Isles of the Emberdark

Early 2026

Skyward Legacy 1

Spring/Summer 2026

Dark One

December 2026

Ghostbloods 1

December 2028

Elantris 2

Summer 2029

Ghostbloods 2

December 2029

Elantris 3

Summer 2030

Ghostbloods 3

December 2030

Stormlight Archive 6

December 2031

If all continues apace, that means Ghostbloods won't hit the shelves until late 2028, with the other two books in the trilogy following at a rate of one per year. To be fair, he'll also be juggling the next two Elantris books, backstopping Janci Patterson as she finishes the next Skyward books, and working on several other Cosmere and non-Cosmere projects in the meantime. With all those in the pipe, 2028 doesn't feel so unreasonable.

Thankfully, for those who are concerned about going a long time without a new Sanderson story, he does have some releases slated for later this year. Isles of the Emberdark, one of Sanderson's secret projects that got a limited Kickstarter-backer release in 2024, will be hitting general retail either late this year or early next, and Tailored Realities — a collection of nine of his non-Cosmere short stories — is scheduled for release on December 9, 2025.

The Stormlight Archive book series won't be done for at least twenty more years, but that leaves time for one major thing to be improved.

As much as I wish I could use Allomancy to speed up time so I could read the next Mistborn book sooner, patience is still a virtue, and authors deserve to take their time. Sanderson has always impressed me, not just because of his prodigious output, but because he takes the editing process just as seriously as the drafting of his books. Sanderson's dedication to the craft of writing remains one of his most irable qualities, and it contributes to the success of series like Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive.
