Fans of Bridgerton on Netflix are anxiously looking forward to the second season of the series, but it hasn't been confirmed yet. However, given the success of season one, it’s a good bet that the series will be picked up for more seasons.
The ending of season one left a memorable mark when it revealed the identity of Lady Whistledown. Some fans felt like it was the right time for the reveal while others felt that it was made known too early in the series. Here are the reasons why this reveal was perfectly timed as well as why it shouldn’t have happened yet.
Waited: The reveal didn’t make total sense
Fans have made many comparisons between Bridgerton and Gossip Girl. However, while Gossip Girl waited until the final season to reveal that Dan Humphrey had been Gossip Girl all along, Bridgerton took a faster approach. But, on a smaller level, this reveal also didn’t make a ton of sense.
Penelope Featherington often said some rather upsetting and cruel things about people she cared about, and she also doesn't’ seem to have the life experience to be Lady Whistledown.
Perfect: It didn’t drag things out just for drama
One issue that happens on many episodic TV series is that drama and storylines can be drawn out for a long time. Mysteries and questions can be left for multiple seasons, and sometimes they aren’t even revealed.
So, it was a bit of a relief to not have the show teasing out this one storyline for a long time. This can get draining and make audiences lose interest.
Waited: There were more possible storylines
On the other hand, there’s also something that isn’t great about ending a storyline too soon. Most people were able to watch through Bridgerton rather quickly and because there were so many characters, the storyline hadn’t gotten too tired yet.
There was a possibility to get deeper into some of the characters that could have been Lady Whistledown. Since most of the first season was about Simon and Daphne, the reveal might not have been necessary so soon.
Perfect: It gave fans a lot to discuss
Whether you liked this ending of the first season or couldn’t stand it, the truth is that the reveal game the internet has a lot to talk about. Of course, everyone was already interacting online about the show because of its sexy scenes, especially because of Simon, but this just added to the excitement.
For any series, getting people to talk about and discuss your show is a good thing, and it bodes well for many more seasons in the future.
Waited: It would have been better to figure it out with Eloise
While Eloise ends the season thinking that Lady Whistledown is actually Madame Delacroix, and she has no idea that the gossiping writer is actually her best friend.
While this will likely lead to future drama and storylines later, it would have been nice to see the reveal alongside Eloise the character figuring it out.
Perfect: The foreshadowing moment with Penelope and Eloise
While there are some things about Penelope being Lady Whisteldown that don’t make sense, there was also some foreshadowing leading up to this moment.
Early on, Eloise and Penelope discuss who they think she could be, and Eloise says that it’s not her. The ladies question one another, and Penelope is able to slip under the radar after this.
Waited: We needed to learn more about Penelope first
While Penelope is clearly a smart young woman who spends a lot of time observing others around her, it would have been nice to get some more insight into what drove her to start The Society Papers.
It seems like a somewhat vindictive thing to do, and she did actively end up running or nearly ruining many people’s lives, so hopefully, fans will at least learn more about her motives in the next season.
Perfect: Penelope has shown all along that she isn’t always sweet
While Penelope might be more astute and observant than many of the people around her, especially her family , she’s not always perfectly sweet.
She does seem to care about others, but she can get upset and even betray people when it suits her such as what she did with Marina and Colin.
Waited: Because it was one of the biggest mysteries in the series
Having a big mystery that fans want to know the answer to can keep viewers watching. So, since the identity of Lady Whistledown was the biggest mystery in the series, Bridgerton might have revealed its hand too early in the game.
Fans just hope there is another similar element of intrigue, later on, to keep them watching.
Perfect: The season needed a good ending
However, while it’s good to wonder about a big reveal, every season needs an ending. For an ending to be memorable, it helps to have a cliffhanger or big reveal that leaves fans wanting more until new episodes are released.
This ending made fans interested in the direction of the story and didn't leave them waiting forever in a way that would be frustrating.
