Summary
- Slayers: A Buffyverse Story season 2 won't happen, which means Disney should finally reboot or revive Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
- Slayers was the closest thing to a revival yet, so if Disney won't allow it to continue, then it really needs to get moving with its own plans for the TV show.
- A Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is still being worked on, but hasn't made much progress in the past few years.
With Slayers: A Buffyverse Story season 2 not happening, then it's time to finally get moving on a Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended with season 7, the story of Buffy Summers and the Scooby Gang has never truly finished. Their journeys continued in multiple comic book runs, novels, and most recently the Audible series Slayers, which brought back several original cast .
However, for all that, there's long been talk of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot or revival in some form. This was originally reported to be in the works back in 2018, with Monica Owusu-Breen (Midnight, Texas) onboard as showrunner. There's been little to no progress on any kind of reboot or revival show in the years since, but that's something that should change in order to give the Buffyverse the future it deserves.

Disney Must Do Something With Buffy If Slayers Season 2 Cannot Happen
The Buffy franchise shouldn't go to waste.
In revealing that allegations against Joss Whedon, the TV show's creator. This allowed those cast to reclaim their characters, and it would have been great to see them continue their journeys.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: 11 Biggest Reveals & Spoilers From The New Sequel
Buffy the Vampire Slayer' new sequel series, Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, includes some important updates about what happened after the show.
Secondly, Slayers: A Buffyverse Story was entertaining in its own right, and whether fans had kept up with the comics or not, delivered a fun experience for the show's audience. Thirdly, Slayers season 2 was very clearly set up by the ending of season 1. The Audible series revealed that Drusilla had Willow prisoner, Giles had been turned into a vampire, and Angel was seemingly still Angelus in its alternate reality, so there were big things to come.
It would be pretty insulting for Disney to allow Buffy the Vampire Slayer to stay dormant, while canceling the closest thing to a revival that's happened so far.
There could be a variety of reasons as to why Disney won't allow Slayers to continue, but the most optimistic outlook is that it has its own plans for the franchise. And, in truth, this is now a must. It would be pretty insulting for Disney to allow Buffy the Vampire Slayer to stay dormant, while canceling the closest thing to a revival that's happened so far. The only way to justify it is if the reboot really is going to happen, and it needs clear space to tell its story and, ideally, bring some of those same cast back.
Why Is A Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot Taking So Long?
A Buffy reboot was first reported in 2018.
As mentioned, Buffy the Vampire Slayer's reboot was put into development back in 2018, so just why hasn't it happened yet? One big reason is likely to do with Disney's takeover of Fox. The Buffy reboot was announced prior to that, and seemingly was among the projects to stall after the acquisition as the Mouse House plotted what to do with all its new IPs. In 2022 it was reported to have been "paused," although in January 2024 Dolly Parton gave an update on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, saying:
“They’re still working on that. They’re thinking about bringing it back and revamping it.”
Dolly Parton produced Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel via her Sandollar Productions company.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a beloved TV show, albeit one with a complicated legacy because of Whedon, and that does mean it needs great care and attention to get any kind of reboot or revival right. There's an argument that it shouldn't be touched at all, given how good the original show was (and a great ending, in particular), but there remains a real power to its story and, as Slayers proved, potential with its world. If it can't be told on Audible, then do it on the screen.

Why Buffy The Vampire Slayer's Faith Spinoff Never Happened (& What It Could Have Covered)
The universe of Buffy the Vampire Slayer could have expanded even more with a spinoff focused on Faith, but sadly, it never happened.
It's no bad thing if the reboot takes its time to ensure everything is perfect, but it doesn't appear as though much work has happened on it at all. Still, the timing of Parton's update and the news Slayers season 2 won't happen could suggest there are more concrete moves taking place. They might purely be coincidental, of course, but hopefully it's a sign that, after six years in development hell, Buffy the Vampire Slayer's return could be about to happen.
