Sam Wilson has over 40 years of comic book history, and is frequently seen fighting alongside Steve Rogers as a member of the Avengers. He was so popular that Rogers' book was called Captain America and the Falcon for some time, but it was not to last: when Rogers died at the end of Civil War, Wilson suited up in the red, white and blue costume as the new patriotic hero of the United States. Not all fans were excited to see the former Falcon pick up the shield, but he soon won them over and became so popular as the new Captain America that when Rogers returned from the dead, the two decided to share the name. In current comics continuity, there are now two Captain Americas: Rogers and Wilson, and both received their own series in 2022.

The White Wolf has led a tragic life. Hunter's birth parents were tragically killed, his adoptive parents happened to be the Queen and King of Wakanda, and Hunter decided to be the best Wakandan ever after he felt inadequate next to his royal brother. This led to the Wakandan Secret Police, a fight with T'Challa, and exile - meaning Black Panther's brother has always sought a sort of revenge after the fact. For his part, Sam Wilson is in desperate need of a new villain...and here comes a character who feels lost in the shadow of someone greater - just like Sam himself.

Both the White Wolf and Sam Wilson have struggled to find their identities. Now both characters may face each other in battle, and while T'Challa's brother is a villain, his motivations are easily understood. Captain America's next target is taken from one of the better Black Panther stories in recent years, and may end up defining Sam Wilson's career as the star-spangled superhero.
