Captain Marvel's next adventure on the big screen will be in Nia DaCosta's Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). While The Marvels is a direct sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel, the movie is expected to be more of a team-up story, incorporating several new characters and further developing Carol Danvers's personal story. Established as the most powerful of the active Avengers and being at the center of the cosmic MCU, Captain Marvel has become a key player in the franchise.

Even though Carol Danvers has taken a back seat since the final battle against Thanos, Captain Marvel's story is being improved indirectly by two MCU Phase 4 productions: Ms. Marvel can show how Captain Marvel is perceived by the world compared to other Avengers, something that the MCU hasn't explored yet. Ms. Marvel will also set the stage for The Marvels, which will tie Danvers's story to Kamala's and Monica's. Meanwhile, Secret Invasion can dive into the Skrull storyline first introduced in Captain Marvel, and potentially even retcon the idea that the Skrulls aren't villains in the MCU. The Nick Fury espionage show can also properly introduce SWORD, an element linked to Captain Marvel's history in the comics, as well as explain why Talos now seems to hate Carol.

The MCU is known for expanding upon characters in the time between their solo films. The Incredible Hulk, has appeared in numerous MCU films with varying degrees of importance, and is now set to have a role in She-Hulk as well. With so much content being produced for MCU Phase 4, the wait for each main character's next solo adventure can be long, meaning that using other movies and Disney+ shows to advance the story is a good alternative.

Apart from her solo film, Captain Marvel hasn’t had much screen time in the MCU so far — but that doesn’t mean Phase 4 can’t advance her story through other movies and shows while fans await the next cinematic chapter. The Captain Marvel corner of the Avengers universe is a rich one and can be linked to the stories of the Krees, the Skrull, SWORD, and Kamala Khan. It remains to be seen how Ms. Marvel and Secret Invasion will affect Carol Danver’s MCU Phase 4 arc and beyond.
