Chicago Med star Yaya DaCosta reveals her one condition for returning to the show. Created by Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead, the series premiered on NBC back in 2015, tracking the lives and relationships of different staff within the emergency department at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. DaCosta portrays April Sexton, whose dedication to patient care resulted in her leaving Chicago Med after season 6 and choosing to enter a nurse practitioner program.

DaCosta reprised her role in Chicago Med season 8, but it is unclear whether she will make another appearance. During a recent interview with TV Insider, the actor revealed that if April were to come back, it should be as a doctor. DaCosta noted that while April helped her brother with his education, she expected the character to complete her own, and reflected on her entire arc. Read DaCosta's comments regarding a potential return to Chicago Med below:

"I always thought April was going to finish her schooling and become a doctor. They introduced her little brother, Noah [Roland Buck III], who she actually helped put through school, and he became a doctor. So yeah, I think the idea was always that we would kind of tap into some woman’s empowerment and now that he was all set, go back to her fulfilling her dream, and I guess just as time went on, everyone was comfortable seeing her as a nurse. The way that she was in the hospital, the way that she interacted with the patients, the wisdom that she brought to the cases, the way that the doctors could trust her to just finish their sentences and start doing what was needed before they’re even asked, I think that kind of gave her a lot of credibility and expectation that she would be a doctor. So if ever in this or any other dimension, April Sexton were to return to screen, it would have to be as a doctor."

Could April Return To Chicago Med?

Dr. Ethan Choi and April Sexton in Chicago Med

April has been a main character throughout most of Chicago Med, and her relationship with Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) was an important storyline as the series progressed. Things between them seemed to be over though, until the season 6 finale, when Ethan got shot and April confessed she had difficulty moving on. Despite a brief exit from the series, DaCosta's character made a return to Chicago Med, reuniting with Ethan during season 8.

April and Ethan bought a mobile clinic that would allow them to treat more people, and after getting married in Chicago Med season 8, their journeys seemed to end on a positive note. However, within the One Chicago franchise, cameos can be expected, and Natalie Manning's (Torrey DeVitto) season finale appearance serves as an example. With that in mind, it seems possible that April could return to Chicago Med in the future.

While April's story might have ended, it is worth wondering if there is some way the show could bring her back. It would be interesting to see DaCosta's character take on a larger role, especially because she already did so much at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Her return as a doctor would also likely excite fans of Chicago Med who have enjoyed her arc over the years.
