Chicago P.D. season 11, giving Upton one last sendoff. The season finale focuses on her hunting for the serial killer Frank Matson (Dennis Flanagan) after he kidnaps Voight (Jason Beghe).
Speaking with Variety, Spiridakos teased what to expect from the Chicago P.D. season 11 finale, citing it as an "intense" final episode. While offering details about how emotional Upton's final episode is going to be, the actor also revealed why she decided to exit the series in the finale. Check out what Spiridakos had to say below:
I decided at the end of my sixth season, which is when I had reached out to Gwen and to everyone at Wolf to let them know that I just wanted to do one more year. I wanted us to send out the character with one last season. It was a hard decision — very, very hard. I love everybody on the show — cast, crew, producers, writers, everybody. It’s such an incredible team. I was just curious what was out there for me and wanted to switch it up, and that was it.
She goes through the emotion of feeling so scared of losing [Voight] and then focusing all of that fear and anxiety on the work to do everything she can to outsmart Matson as best she can. The whole team is doing everything they can.
I don’t think anyone sits down the whole episode… There’s a lot of really vulnerable moments. We see these characters, who we haven’t necessarily seen be so vulnerable, you see a lot of that come through as well.
How Will Upton Leave Chicago P.D.?
At the start of season 11, it was revealed Upton and her husband, Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) were possibly getting divorced, following his return to hunting drug cartels for the Army. She's also taken on a greater leadership role since Halstead left the series in season 10, becoming Voight's most trusted ally ever since. This is why this latest development is perfect for an emotional sendoff, as she now has to try and save the life of the one person who's still there for her after all this time.
Since Upton won't be coming back in Chicago P.D. season 12, it's unclear if her final fate in the series will end on a positive note or a tragic one. With Spiridakos teasing plenty of "vulnerable" moments in her final episode, they could correlate to an emotional ending as Upton decides to leave the team. However, it's also possible she has to sacrifice herself in order to save Voight, proving herself as his most trustworthy ally right to the very end. With so much happening in the episode, it's unpredictable as to where she ends up.

1 Chicago PD Star's Best Future Was Already Set Up In The FBI Universe
One main cast member is set to exit Chicago PD following season 11, but given their connection to FBI, they can reprise their role in the CBS series.
However, because it was announced she would be leaving the show prior to the finale, it's very likely she ends up alive by the time the episode is over. This opens the door for an emotional farewell, no matter how the incident with Matson makes her decide to leave. No matter what her final episode looks like, though, the repercussions of her exit will be felt when the show returns. Despite this being her final episode, though, her presence as an important part of Chicago P.D. will remain long after she's gone.
The Chicago P.D. season 11 finale airs on Wednesday, May 22 on NBC.
