There are many strange and interesting mysteries in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and quite a few puzzles to piece together as well. One such mystery is located in the Gestral Village, and it's one that no players have quite figured out the answer to just yet. I'm talking of course about the muscular merchant in the Gestral Village Bazaar who wants to sell you a supposedly amazing weapon called "Excalibur" for 1000 Chroma. If you don't have the Chroma to spare, you might be worried about missing out on some valuable loot.

While there are many amazing weapons in Clair Obscur, Excalibur is not actually one of them at all, and if you decide to purchase it from the merchant in the Bazaar, you'll end up with a Wooden Stick in your inventory that seemingly has no purpose. At this point, you'll probably feel like you've been had, and as far as I can tell, you have. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any real purpose for this particular item in Clair Obscur, even after playing the game for hundreds of hours and testing all the reported "theories" about what it does.

What Happens If You Purchase Excalibur In The Gestral Village

Excalibur Is A Toy Wooden Stick With No Quest Or Reward

When you find the Gestral Village merchant in the Gestral Bazaar, he'll ask if you want to buy the "Excalibur" weapon from him for 1000 Chroma. He claims it's a powerful weapon and can shoot lasers, which sounds too good to be true, and that's because it is. This weapon is not a weapon at all, but a "quest item" called the Wooden Stick that will pop into your inventory after handing over the 1000 Chroma. It may seem that this is connected to an associated quest, but at the moment that does not actually appear to be true.

The Tisseur in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an optional boss that seems peaceful, and it isn't entirely clear whether you should kill it or not.

Many players have speculated that this item is meant to be given to a Gestral child sitting on the top of a pedestal in the Gestral Village. The child's "parent" is at the base of this pedestal trying to get the kid to come down, and you can go up there and interact with him to get him to come back down. However, this doesn't actually require the Wooden Stick item - you can go convince him to come down without purchasing Excalibur, so this theory doesn't seem to be accurate.

In my playthroughs, I could only save the Gestral kid from the pedestal before completing the Gestral Tournament.

It has also been speculated that this item may have something to do with the various Lost Gestrals in Clair Obscur that you can find and return to Sastro back at camp. I can attest that this does not seem to be the case either, and after I found all nine of them, there were no interactions related to the Wooden Stick. I also spoke with every possible Gestral in the Village in both Act 1 and after returning in Acts 2 and 3, to no avail.

Further possible uses for the Wooden Stick I tested out include returning it to Noco after bringing him back to life as part of Monoco's relationship quest and trading it with Delsitra, a merchant in the Gestral Village - neither of these panned out. I also had it in my inventory when visiting the Dark Gestral Arena, Flying Casino, Hidden Gestral Arena, and every other location with Gestral NPCs you can interact with. Ultimately, I never found a use for the Wooden Stick.

Why You Should Not Purchase Excalibur In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

You Can Always Return And Purchase Excalibur Later

Ultimately, this is one item I would advise you NOT to purchase in the early game, as you can save the 1000x Chroma for something more useful. There are absolutely no benefits to buying Excalibur, and as far as I can tell, it is entirely a gimmick made to make you feel like a fool. It's entirely possible that there is a secret or hidden quest that I don't know about or couldn't uncover, or that there may be some kind of glitch preventing a quest from becoming available with certain Gestral NPCs.

"It seems to me this item is meant to be an actual scam, which is both hilarious and demented."

However, as it stands, there doesn't seem to be any reason to purchase the Wooden Stick, aka Excalibur, unless you feel like throwing your Chroma away. Further, if you are short on Chroma, there's no need to waste it here even if you desperately want the useless quest item. You can always return to buy Excalibur from the merchant in the Gestral Bazaar later down the road when you're a little wealthier. It seems to me this item is meant to be an actual scam, which is both hilarious and demented.

All Secret Bosses In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (& How To Beat Them)

There are three "secret" bosses in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and each one is extremely difficult to take down if you're not prepared.

Overall, Excalibur could very well be Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's best-kept secret, or a complete gotcha moment by the game's creators to teach players to be more fiscally responsible with their Chroma. After hours of searching for a solution to this one, I'm officially throwing in the towel, but will be happy to update this article if an answer is ever figured out. Until then, save your Chroma and don't get swindled by the sneaky merchant in the Gestral Bazaar.
