What This Means For Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 4

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 4 Could Potentially Be More Complex

The first season of the revival series began production in August 2022 and arrived in November that year. Due to various delays, season 2's filming didn't start until January 2024, and roughly five months later, the season arrived in June that year. Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 started filming in August 2024, roughly nine months before the season premiere in May. It looks like production time could vary from season to season, but the last two seasons, which arrived almost exactly a year from each other, could indicate that Paramount+ might be aiming for a similar release window for season 4.

Was Criminal Minds’ decision to kill off Will a surprise?

Criminal Minds: Evolution has made a major decision for one of its long-standing SSA’s, killing off JJ’s husband Will in a recent episode. While I knew the actor who played Will didn’t want to come back for another season of Criminal Minds, I was shocked they took the route of killing him off the show. I do, however, think it was the best choice for JJ’s character arc moving forward, as she’ll get to truly handle the grief rather than just have a relationship off-screen.

An early production start date could suggest a few different things. It's very likely that Criminal Minds: Evolution might return sooner than expected, but there's also the possibility that season 4 might simply require more time to film, which could mean more complex storylines and arcs. On the other hand, the new post confirms the season regulars, with Tyler becoming a more permanent member of the BAU team.

Our Take On Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 4's Filming Update

More Tyler In Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 4

Ryan Hatanaka as Tyler Green and Kirsten Vangsness as Penelope Garcia in Criminal Minds: Evolution.

It seems that no time is being wasted between the airing of season 3 and the production of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 4. Talking about efficiency, season 3 is only four episodes in, and season 4 is already in production, which is great news because it shows that Paramount+ has strong faith in the revival series.

While no viewership statistics have been revealed, there seems to be a lot of interest in the long-running series, especially with the brief return of original cast member Matthew Gray Gubler in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3. It's unclear whether he'll appear again in season 4. With Josh Stewart's Will having died on screen, there'll be at least one familiar face missing from the season of Criminal Minds: Evolution. On the other hand, Tyler has been a really strong addition to the BAU team, and it's very exciting to see more of him in the new season.
