The Legend of Vox Machina's third season still has a lot to answer for, one thing the series has been able to definitively establish is the relative power levels of each Vox Machina member.
Like any good Dungeons & Dragons party, Vox Machina is a well-rounded group, with different fulfilling different niches in the realms of exploration, social encounters, and of course, combat. ittedly, the variety of skillsets divided between The Legend of Vox Machina's cast means that no single member is capable of doing everything, with each player character having their own unique strengths and weaknesses. Still, at the end of the day, there's no denying that certain parts of the team would be able to fare far better on their own in of raw strength and special abilities.
7 Pike Trickfoot
The steadfast gnome cleric
Any adventuring party worth their salt needs a dedicated healer, and Vox Machina is no exception. Enter Pike Trickfoot, the team's stalwart gnomish cleric devoted to the goddess Sarenrae. Due to actress Ashley Johnson's demanding schedule during the events of the original Critical Role campaign, Pike was often absent from the team, explained away by a variety of plot contrivances. Luckily, The Legend of Vox Machina was able to incorporate Pike more permanently into the story.
As the team's resident cleric, Pike often did more ing than direct damage dealing or spellcasting. Her ability to give the party buffs like enchanting Vox's arrows to pierce dragonhide or healing Vax before he can succumb to his injuries make her an invaluable asset to Vox Machina. While Pike is surprisingly tough and resilient despite her small frame, she's ultimately the most reliant on teamwork compared to other party , unable to withstand or dole out much punishment on her own. She's also somewhat helpless without her holy symbol, as demonstrated when Delilah cracks it.
6 Scanlan Shorthalt
The charismatic spellcaster with a flair for the dramatic
The archetypal bard character, Scanlan Shorthalt is a quick-witted bard with a fast tongue. The group's second diminutive member, the gnome makes up for his unassuming physical presence with a vast array of magical powers and a terrifying power of persuasion. Well-suited to being the face of the party, Scanlan has the instincts and social skills to sway the opinion of any groups or institutions unsure of Vox Machina's presence, so long as his weakness for women doesn't end up ruining things. In the first episode, Scanlan's ability to perform for potential employers helps land Vox Machina their first job.
On the actual battlefield, Scanlan is surprisingly capable. His signature spell, Scanlan's Hand, is incredibly versatile, creating a massive spectral hand capable of offense, defense, or locomotion. Of course, his clutch use of Counterspell was also crucial in allowing the team to defeat Vecna in the final days of the original Critical Role campaign. As impressive and useful as Scanlan's combat feats are, he still over relies on his cunning and bizarre luck to be truly considered among the strongest of Vox Machina.
5 Vex'ahlia
Vox Machina's resident ranger
One half of the sibling duo Vex and Vax from which Vox Machina get their name, Vex'ahlia is a capable explorer, huntress, and combatant in both the original Critical Role series and the animated adaptation. Starting out as a beastmaster ranger, Vex'ahlia's voice actress Laura Bailey stuck with the often-disparaged class through thick and thin, proving that rangers could keep up with the more optimized classes through thick and thing. Later, Vex also gained some rogue levels, granting her some crucial stealth and assassination abilities on top of her already deadly accuracy with a bow and arrow.
Primarily a ranged fighter, Vex is still no slouch in close combat, and is the group's primary hunter and tracker. This comes in handy outside of combat for tracking down foes, and in The Legend of Vox Machina, Vex even has the ability to innately sense the presence of dragons. This came to be crucial in uncovering the true secret identity of General Krieg as the villainous blue dragon, Brimscythe.
Vex'ahlia is capable of dealing some of the most tremendous damage of any party member when combining her Sneak Attack with her Hunter's Mark spell and special Dragonslayer Arrows, often buffed by Pike's magic. By combining so many sources of extra damage, Vex was able to deal a staggering 108 points of damage in a single turn to the white dragon Umbrasyl during the Chroma Conclave arc. Her bear companion, Trinket, is also a great distraction and damage sponge in combat, especially after he gets upgraded with a unique set of impenetrable armor crafted from the hide of a bulette.
4 Keyleth Of The Air Ashari
The magical master of nature's forces
Druids are some of the most versatile and powerful classes in Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition, and Keyleth shows this off at every available opportunity. Raised in an isolated tribe of elemental nature dwellers who worship the air, Keyleth doesn't let her limited world experience get in the way of her capabilities as a spellcaster and wildshape . Though Keyleth begins the animated adaptation as a nervous fighter hesitant to actually make use of her powers, she learns to summon her awesome bond with nature in order to protect her friends, shielding them with vines and guiding them with magical sunlight.
In Critical Role, Keyleth's repertoire of spells isn't to be underestimated, with powerful incantations like Plane Shift and True Polymorph making for a profoundly varied suite of arcane powers. Yet, as a Circle of the Moon druid, Keyleth's true specialty lies in her Wild Shape abilities, able to morph herself into a variety of dangerous forms not available to the average druid. As high as her potential is, her recurring self-doubt and feelings of fear and unworthiness ultimately hold back her total power levels when compared to the rest of the party.
3 Vax'ildan
The multi-class damage dealer
Starting his adventuring career as a simple rogue, Vax'ildan goes on to have one of the most prolific developments of any fighter in Vox Machina, resulting in a suite of unique abilities. The more city-minded sibling compared to Vex's love of nature, Vax'ildan has an affinity for stealth and subterfuge, able to single-handedly infiltrate the Palace of the Sovereign and steal from the Briarwoods undetected. As a rogue, Vax'ildan is particularly suited to dealing damage compared to most of the other party , excelling as an assassin as well as a thief.
Later on, Vax adds some magical abilities to his arsenal thanks to his connection to the Raven Queen, known in The Legend of Vox Machina as the Matron of Ravens. Offering himself as a sacrifice to the fey goddess in order to save his sister from her influence, Vax winds up walking the dark path of a vengeance paladin. This ends leads to Vax opening up a new array of supernatural powers to him, including the manifestation of black, raven-like wings and a divine smite he can apply to his weaponry.
As if that weren't enough, Vax'ildan's player character, the famed voice actor Liam O'Brien, ends up adding in a dash of Druid to the mix as well. When combining his many magical powers and sources of damage-altering abilities, Vax is able to deal a whopping 109 points of damage with a single attack in Critical Role's campaign one, a record that is still uncontested by any other Vox Machina member. With his attacking catchphrase "dagger, dagger, dagger", Vax is undeniably one of the team's most dangerous .
2 Percival de Rolo
The elegant human sharpshooter with a reputation for violence
A normal human with no innate magical abilities, the esteemed Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III may seem like an unassuming member of Vox Machina to be ranked so highly. But as any veteran player of Dungeons & Dragons knows, the prowess of a simple human Fighter is never to be underestimated. Combined with Percy's unique talent for firearms in a fantasy setting, the character earns his fan nickname of "No Mercy Percy" time and time again.
Vax may hold the title for most damage in a single hit, Percy is unequivocally a beast when it comes to dishing out high damage numbers. With multiple attacks, unique critical hits, and action surge, Percy was able to deliver a jaw-dropping 249 points of damage in a single turn in the Critical Role one-shot "The Search for Grog." Not only his he a capable damage dealer with his unique weaponry like the Pepperbox pistol and "Bad News" anti-materiel rifle, but Percy is incredibly resilient, able to shrug off demonic influence and survive being shot clean through his hand.
1 Grog Strongjaw
Vox Machina's undisputed combat monster
While he might be the most useless member of Vox Machina outside of a fight, there's no denying that Grog Strongjaw as nearly as terrifying an opponent on his own as the rest of the Critical Role cast put together. A goliath barbarian, Grog is both incredibly tanky and a vicious damage dealer, able to nearly keep up with Vax and Percival in of raw numbers while surviving hits that other party could only dream of absorbing. Entering the fray with his Travis Willingham's irreverent quote, "I would like to rage", Grog Strongjaw lives up to his reputation for violence.
Even if he is simple-minded, Grog gets the finishing blow on Vox Machina's most terrifying enemies time and time again. It's Grog who delivers the final blow on Brimscythe with his mighty axe, and Grog who single-handedly holds off Sylas despite his terrifying magical sword, Craven Edge, saving Vax from being slain. Of all the Critical Role campaign one party to be featured in The Legend of Vox Machina, there's no denying that none are more powerful or suited to combat than Grog Strongjaw.
