It's plain to see that the Cyberpunk 2077 launch has not been great. It certainly didn't help that the game was so unbelievably hyped; for the eight years after it was announced, Cyberpunk 2077 topped wishlists, even after three separate delays. Upon release, fans were disappointed to find the game riddled with issues. This poor state reflected very badly on CDPR's infamous atmosphere of developer crunch in the workplace, subjecting workers to unreasonable conditions and working hours, only for the overworked developers to come out with a sub-par product. CDPR has already promised a litany of patches and bug fixes, but it may be too little, too late.
CDPR is already facing consequences for this shoddy launch. Review aggregate required to only use footage provided by CDPR in their reviews, rather than any footage they recovered themselves. This rather scandalous notice will remain on the site until February 2021, at which point CDPR will hopefully have improved the last-gen versions of the game, as has been promised.
CDPR has a lot of work to do if it wants to improve its image following this release. Fortunately, the company is already taking a few steps in the right direction. For instance, it was announced recently that the company will be issuing bonuses to its developers, no matter what. These bonuses would ordinarily only have been awarded if the game maintained a Metacritic score of 90 or higher, a prerequisite that probably contributed to the atmosphere of crunch in the studio, but the executives have lifted this condition, and the devs can look forward to receiving these bonuses no matter what.
The team insists that it is hard at work delivering patches and updates to Cyberpunk 2077, and there's certainly a lot of work to be done in that regard. If the reviews are any indication, there really is a good game deep inside Cyberpunk 2077. Hopefully CD Projekt Red can help bring it out.
