At long last, it seems like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners might finally be getting a sequel. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is one of the biggest anime to come out of the 2020s, with it even suring Cyberpunk 2077, the game it spun off of, in popularity, and because of that, while the story ended rather conclusively, it hasn’t stopped fans from wanting a sequel.
While Cyberpunk: Edgerunners wasn’t originally written to go past what was already put out, it seems like that’s finally set to change. In late 2024, Netflix released a Cyberpunk anime teaser confirming more Cyberpunk anime content was in development, and now with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners getting a at Anime Expo 2025, it’s all but confirmed that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will be getting a sequel of some sort. There’s no telling what that would entail, but with how great Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is, there’s no reason not to be excited.
Why Has Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 Been Taking So Long?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2's Big Delay Explained
With Cyberpunk: Edgerunners seemingly getting a second season, that begs the question of why it took so long for it to happen at all. For starters, Studio Trigger, the studio behind Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, has been incredibly busy since Edgerunners came out, as they’ve not only been working on Delicious in Dungeon and Gridman Universe, but the Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt sequel, as well. Hiroyuki Imaishi, who directed Edgerunners, is even personally directing Panty & Stocking, so overall, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 has been taking so long because Studio Trigger hasn’t had the time for it.

After a Single Season, Why Did Netflix Go and Let One of Its Best Anime Die?
Netflix's Cyberpunk Edgerunners is one of their most popular anime adaptations, and yet it only has one season, but is that a good thing?
More than that, of course, is how the series was constructed. Not only did the series end on a very conclusive note, albeit a bittersweet one, but CDPR community manager Satoru Honma outright said that there were no plans for more Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, so Cyberpunk: Edgerunners hasn’t received a second season because it was never designed for one. All signs point to something having changed in that regard, but it’s still easy to see why it’s been taking as long as it has.
What Should Fans Expect From Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2's Potential Story Explained
Now that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 is all but confirmed, that begs the question of what it would be about. In the aforementioned interview with Satoru Honma, he said that while there were no plans for a second season at the time, if they were to do one, then it wouldn’t be a continuation of the original story, but something completely different set in the same world. In short, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2, if it’s happening, would be more of a spiritual successor than a straightforward sequel, and characters from season 1 would probably only make brief cameos at best.
That idea might be disappointing to some, but as great as it would be to see more of Lucy and the few other characters who survived the events of season 1, there’s only so much that could be done with them that wouldn’t ruin where their stories ended, so Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 being largely divorced from season 1 is the best way to continue the world without ruining what came before it. All of this is hypothetical, of course, but hopefully, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ Anime Expo will clarify what people can expect from the franchise, going forward.
