the original vision was scrapped by Marvel, with the studio firing the writing and directing teams. At New York City Comic Con, D'Onofrio said this of the change:

When we finally figured out how to do this show, it was so exciting, and to really play it the way that Charlie and I always wanted to continue. A lot of us involved in the first iteration were really yearning for a better way, and it worked out.

The second iteration of Daredevil: Born Again will reunite D'Onofrio and Cox with Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Franklin "Foggy" Nelson, and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher. Though few plot details have been revealed, the official synopsis for Daredevil: Born Again gives some insight into what to expect: "Marvel Television’s “Daredevil: Born Again” catches up with Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, and his nemesis, Wilson Fisk, who’s pursuing his own political endeavors in New York."

What Vincent D'Onofrio's Comments Mean For Daredevil: Born Again

Echo set up the potential for Fisk to run for mayor of New York City, which would adapt a Marvel comics storyline in which Kingpin is successfully elected. His platform was centered on anti-vigilante policies. In fact, the "Devil's Reign" storyline saw Kingpin successfully outlawing vigilantes and establishing a task force to stop anyone found engaging in such activities.

Given D'Onofrio's comments in addition to the setup in Echo, it's likely the MCU will do their own take on "Devil's Reign." If so, it makes sense that both actors would be excited for the story to take this direction. Both Cox and D'Onofrio have expressed enthusiasm for their characters and for starring opposite each other. The intrigue of Kingpin being the mayor of New York could further fuel the animosity between him and Daredevil. Additionally, the actor's comments indicate that the tone of Daredevil: Born Again will draw heavily from the Netflix series.

Kingpin threatening Matt Murdock in Daredevil on Netflix

D'Onofrio seems to think Daredevil: Born Again is headed in the right direction. Aside from his NYCC comments, the actor also discussed whether the series will be as brutal as its predecessor. The Kingpin actor said the Disney+ series actually goes "much further," in of violence. He continued, explaining: "There's one thing in particular, that my character does, that I can't believe made it into the cut."

Regardless of whether it takes inspiration from "Devils's Reign," the series sounds like a return to form if D'Onofrio is to be believed. Daredevil: Born Again premieres on Disney+ on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
