Warning! Contains spoilers for Daredevil #1!One of Daredevil's most infamous outfits has returned to the Marvel Universe, but not in the way fans expected. As Matt Murdock adjusts to his new life, an old costume comes back from the past to literally haunt him.
In Daredevil #1 by Saladin Ahmed and Aaron Kuder, Matt is no longer the Man Without Fear. After dying and going to Hell, Matt has mysteriously come back to life and is now living as a priest with no memory of his former life. Only the new Daredevil, Elektra Natchios, knows that Matt is alive and is keeping an eye on him.
Unfortunately, Elektra is possessed by a demon who wishes to harm Matt. The demon takes Elektra's body and fights Father Matt, triggering memories of his past as Daredevil. The demon gets the upper hand on Matt, but the hero turns things around by performing an impromptu exorcism. Matt manages to separate Elektra from the demon, who bursts into flame. The monster's true form wears Daredevil's early yellow costume variant, and as he dies, he promises Matt that the others that come for him won't be as easy to defeat.
Daredevil's Classic Suit Returns as a Personal Demon of Matt Murdock
Daredevil has gone through some tumultuous changes in his life, and his most recent adventures really put him through the wringer. Matt Murdock teamed up with his greatest love Elektra to take down the immortal ninja clan, the Hand, by resurrecting the organization's rivals, the Fist. Unfortunately, Matt's journey was a failure that ended with several of his allies trapped in Hell. Daredevil went to Hell to free the souls the Hand had trapped, only to wind up stuck in the afterlife. But Matt was given another chance and provided a fresh start free from his former life.
Daredevil's yellow costume is associated with the hero's first foray into the superhero life, so it's a bit surprising to see it on a demon. While the demon never reveals his name, he does espouse how lazy he is, making Matt own up to how slothful he's been. The demon is meant to be Sloth of the Seven Deadly Sins. More specifically, he's meant to be one of Matt's personal seven deadly sins. Sloth mentions that others are going to follow him, meaning there's a good chance that Daredevil is about to come face-to-face with the worst sins of his past.
Daredevil is Confronting His Past Selves and Worst Sins
Daredevil has lived a long, hard life and there are plenty of things he looks back on with regret. The idea of him fighting his biggest sins is an interesting one, especially given the hero's new role as a member of the priesthood. It will be fascinating to watch Matt confront other personal flaws in the form of sins, especially wrath, given his issues with anger. It will also be fun for fans if, like Sloth, these sins appear to Daredevil wearing variations on his previous costumes. Fans know that Matt has had plenty of looks over the years, and seeing them return with demonic upgrades could make for a fun Easter egg as Matt overcomes the worst aspects of himself. Fans can see the hero's yellow costume return in Daredevil #1, on sale now.
