Marvel's best villains in Jessica Jones. His performances are always layered, empathetic, and cunning, and his chemistry with his co-stars is unmatched.
The Brits have been producing heart-stopping, tragic, and memorable crime shows for decades, with hit detective dramas like Midsomer Murders, Endeavour, and Vera and thrillers like Line of Duty and Happy Valley making headlines year after year. In 2013, another legendary crime drama was released on ITV in the U.K. for the first time, as audiences were introduced to a small seaside town rocked by the harrowing death of an 11-year-old boy, and David Tennant's performance was at the heart of it all.
David Tennant Fans Can't Miss His Great Underrated British Crime Show, Broadchurch
This Is So Much More Than A Whodunit
If you haven't yet, I highly recommend you watch Broadchurch, the Chris Chibnall creation that currently boasts a 92% critics' rating and a 91% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and rightfully so. Chibnall, who became a Doctor Who showrunner during Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor era, created one of the most profound, shocking, and addictive crime dramas ITV has ever produced. There are 24 episodes in three seasons. Every season deals with a new storyline and case, though the second season also revisits the first season's case.

David Tennant's 10 Best Movie & TV Characters, Ranked
Legendary performer David Tennant is a standout figure in both television and movies, and his best characters are why his career is so successful.
Broadchurch doesn't feel like a typical whodunit. Yes, the killer's identity is the leading narrative thread in seasons 1 and 2 – season 3 deals with a different kind of crime altogether, though it's certainly no less harrowing – but Broadchurch is also about how violent crimes can upend a tight-knit community. It's about neighbors turning on each other without sufficient evidence, the desperation to discover the truth, and the role of the press in aiding (and obstructing) delicate criminal cases. It's so incredibly human, and no one is left unaffected. The mystery and the characters' lives are equally compelling, and Broadchurch's ing cast is second to none.
Broadchurch Sees David Tennant & Olivia Colman Teaming Up For An Investigation
Tennant And Colman Are The Heart Of The Show
David Tennant is always a force to be reckoned with. His performance as DI Alec Hardy is enthralling. He's grumpy, sarcastic, and distant. Chibnall and Tennant could easily have made him into a typical "boss detective," one who pushes everyone away, a true loner only intent on cracking the case. He's so much more than that, though. There are clever, well-placed glimpses of the man beneath the tired eyes, especially in later seasons as his unconventional friendship with his sergeant simmers, and we see him interact with his somewhat estranged daughter.
Broadchurch features one of the best detective duos, arguably of all time, and it's all down to Tennant and Colman's performances.
So, who do you put opposite David Tennant in such a sensitive, strong role? None other than Oscar winner Olivia Colman, of course. Colman's DS Ellie Miller is funny, sensitive, clever, and hard-working, and while she could have been a meek assistant to Tennant's Hardy, she stands up for herself when he needs to be put in his place. In the season 1 finale, as the truth is finally brought to life, Colman's performance is unforgettable. Broadchurch features one of the best detective duos, arguably of all time, and it's all down to Tennant and Colman's performances.
Broadchurch Deserves More Love For Being One Of The Best British Crime Shows
Each Storyline Brings Something New To The Show
Though the second season falters somewhat as it returns to the scene of season 1's crime, there's no denying the power of Broadchurch's stories or the intricate ways the cases are unraveled. Most characters are suspects at some point, but not just because the show is ticking off a list. Each character's backstory and "motive" fuels the town's growing paranoia and examines what it means to be human. Marriages fall apart, childhood friendships don't last forever, and witch hunts without evidence can have devastating consequences.
Interestingly, after Broadchurch season 1, Fox commissioned a limited-series American remake called Gracepoint, spearheaded by Chibnall and Tennant. Why watch the remake, though, when you can watch the original, and embrace a fundamentally British story the way it was meant to be seen? Broadchurch is about more than the story; the setting is fundamental, and it's impossible to capture that atmosphere anywhere else. If you're looking for more David Tennant and feel ready to experience one of the most beloved modern British crime dramas, it's time to watch Broadchurch.
