DC's newest 2024 premiere excitingly marks the official start of James Gunn’s DCU's Superman movie on the horizon, it seems there's a lot to look forward to when it comes to the franchise.

After a patient two-year wait, fans are finally getting their first official taste of the revamped universe with one of the final 2024 DC releases. The early ratings and reviews of the show in question are looking promising, as it currently boasts a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes with 21 reviews so far. A positive start like this is exactly what Gunn and Safran’s DCU needs in order to win over long-time DCEU fans and capture the attention of new audiences.

The First Official DC Universe Release Debuted Today

Creature Commandos released today on Max with a two-episode premiere, and the season will have seven episodes in total. The series takes place following the events of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker season 1, marking the official transition between the DCEU and the DCU. The show introduces new characters to the franchise, as well as characters who have ties to past DCEU story threads like Rick Flag Sr. Pre-existing characters like Sean Gunn’s Weasel and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller also make appearances.

The show is the very first entry in the DCU’s first era, with the first two episodes' dialogue and direction intended to help audiences understand what parts of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker should still be considered canon after this reboot. Anticipation will only build from here with how much closer the first DC Universe film’s 2025 release date is getting. A casual yet well-crafted series like Creature Commandos can set up any world-building that the studio wants to establish before its first major film, as well as show fans what they can expect from future DCU stories tone-wise.

The next project after Creature Commandos will be Superman, which is the first official DCU film entry under “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.” Filming wrapped for the movie in July 2024, and the film is currently set for a July 11, 2025 release date. It will be an interesting month, for the superhero genre as The Fantastic Four: First Steps from Marvel Studios will premiere just weeks later, and both films are marking a new era of sorts for their respective studios.

There is a lot of pressure on Superman to perform well, and for most people, it’ll mark the start of the revamped DC Universe. However, Creature Commandos will always be the official first entry of the DCU, and is a project worth checking out for those who are eager for the future. The excellent early reviews of the premiere episodes is an impressive feat for the show, and if Creature Commandos is a sign of what’s to come, then the DC Universe is in good hands.

The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
