Spoilers ahead for DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #1
The final chapter of DCeased: War of the Undead Gods. Although a cure has been discovered, the next zombie threat on the horizon will be unlike anything the survivors have ever faced before.
In the first DCeased storyline, Kal-El's Superman managed to save his family and Damian Wayne from the corrupted Anti-Life Equation Cyborg brought to Earth following Darkseid's attempted invasion. However, the Man of Steel eventually succumbed to the infection, becoming one of the most dangerous and powerful zombies of all time. That being said, the infected Superman chose to enter the Sun and drain it of all its energies rather than taking on his son Jon Kent and the army of Green Lanterns who had been deployed to stop him.
Following the second chapter of DCeased where the survivors returned to Earth and created a cure for the Anti-Life Equation, the new DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #1 from Tom Taylor and Trevor Hairsine sees Jon Kent's Superman and a collection of heroes drawing out his infected father from the Sun and holding him long enough to ister the new cure. Returning to the land of the fully living with the Man of Steel sporting a new metal arm to replace the one he lost as a zombie, Earth now has both Kal and Jon to defend it while mankind is gradually cured. However, the rest of the universe is now in danger with the reveal that not only Darkseid has been infected but all of the gods of New Genesis as well. Receiving a dark warning from what remained of Brainiac, it seems having 2 Kryptonians won't be enough to guarantee Earth's safety as many might have hoped.
Seeing as how the Zombie New Gods ripped Supergirl to shreds at the beginning of the issue, it looks as though the world will need much more than Jon and Kal alone to withstand the next wave of zombies headed their way. Furthermore, it stands to reason that Zombie Darkseid will likely be leading the Undead Gods in the issues to come. Seeing as how not even Kryptonians are invincible in this incredibly dark version of the DC Universe, it wouldn't be surprising (yet still immensely tragic) if Tom Taylor brought back Kal-El just for him to lose his son in this final chapter of DCeased.
At any rate, it's clear that the zombies headed to Earth will be incredibly dangerous and lethal while still retaining their godly abilities. Supergirl was brutal proof that withstanding their onslaught will require all hands on deck and an immense collection of powers ready to defend the remains of humanity that's still in the early stages of recovery. While it's good that there are now 2 versions of Superman to protect the planet in this final chapter of DCeased, this first issue makes it evident that they won't be able to do so alone. DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #1 is on sale now.
