The DC Universe has the perfect project to bring back Zack Snyder. The old DCEU is soon coming to an end with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is set to release in December, being the final movie of the old shared universe. DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran will then replace the DCEU with their new DC Universe, which will effectively start with the release of its first movie, 2025's Superman: Legacy. The reboot film of the Man of Steel is written and directed by Gunn, with David Corenswet as the DCU's Superman.

Some directors have already been announced for the DCU, with Logan's James Mangold set to direct the Swamp Thing movie, The Flash's Andy Muschietti taking on the DC Universe's Batman reboot The Brave and the Bold, and Gunn himself directing Superman: Legacy. Despite the DCEU being left behind, Gunn bringing back Muschietti, especially after The Flash's box office bomb, is good news for Snyder's chances of returning to DC. Gunn clearly does not have a problem with bringing back DCEU directors, and Snyder might someday be open to a return. If Snyder chooses to do so, there's already a perfect project for him.

The Authority Movie Would Be The Perfect Place For The DCU To Bring Back Zack Snyder

DC Comics' The Authority

Snyder's time in the DCEU, as well as his work on the Watchmen movie, showed where the director's sensibilities regarding superhero movies lie. Snyder is a masterful visual storyteller with a flair for putting exciting action sequences onscreen; however, the director is not the best choice to handle superhero stories that are more light-hearted and colorful. Snyder's dark storytelling, with a focus on violence and reflection on society, is a perfect match for one of the DC Universe's announced movies: The Authority.

The DC Universe's The Authority will focus on a team of anti-heroes that will go to extreme lengths to ensure that the world is safe, no matter what risks they must take or the people they must kill. The Authority's include several different types of characters, with an immortal being, a cyborg, a magic , and more making up the team. Apollo and Midnighter are the team's most famous characters, with the duo often being compared to more extreme versions of Superman and Batman — something Snyder can definitely excel with — respectively. The Authority's and operating style make the team a perfect fit for Snyder's talents.

Why Zack Snyder Could Be Willing To Return For The DCU Authority Movie

Blue Beetle, director Zack Snyder, and Superman in Justice League

Snyder left DC after a personal tragedy, with the studio then recruiting The Avengers director Joss Whedon to conduct extensive reshoots on 2017's Justice League. Snyder was hurt by the ordeal, and even with his vision realized in 2021's Zack Snyder's Justice League, him ever returning to DC is a difficult topic. However, it might not be impossible. Gunn and Snyder have a good relationship, and with the former DC regime out, Snyder could the new DC Universe. With Snyder hyping up DC's Blue Beetle, it seems like the door is still open for him to direct a DC Universe movie, and The Authority would be perfect for him.
