Warning: contains a preview of Dark Ages #5!

While there are few heroes Nick Fury needs to be had first.

Marvel's Dark Ages depicts a Marvel Universe that lost all electricity thanks to an ongoing, planet-wide EMP that was used to shut down an entity known as the Unmaker who would have ended the world. However, rather than the world erupting into chaos with the subsequent breakdown of society, Marvel's superhero community saw the chance for a fresh start. The majority of the world was united with Wakanda as a new world capital and a utopia was created when everything pointed to the world becoming a dark dystopia. However, Apocalypse has formed his own holdout group of villains and heroes, corrupted using the powers of the Purple Man, and intends to wake the Unmaker to take its power for himself. As such, a rescue mission has been launched, with several heroes sailing across the sea to save their kidnapped friends and stop the supervillain.

Unfortunately, in Dark Ages #4 the heroes' floating helicarrier was attacked by the marauding Ghost Raiders, resulting in the death of Nick Fury. Now, the new preview for Dark Ages #5 from Tom Taylor and Iban Coello sees even Deadpool taking things seriously once he learns that Fury has fallen, confirming that he ultimately respected the leader as "one of the good ones." DARK AGES #5 - Spider-Man s Doctor Doom, the X-Men, the Inhumans, the Avengers and what's left of the Fantastic Four on a rescue mission across a continent ruled by a man. But they could be too late. The dictator of Europe has heroes and villains by his side, and the unthinkable is now in motion. Apocalypse could tear the world apart.

Similar to Deadpool's love and respect for Captain America, this new preview confirms that Wade Wilson actually held Fury in more regard than he does most heroes, a fact that is acutely evident considering how uncharacteristically serious he becomes once he learns of his death. Not only is the loss of Nick Fuy incredibly tragic, but it's the perfect dark reminder that Marvel's heroes are in for quite the fight ahead of them, where the former director of SHIELD may only be the first casualty of many to come. Dark Ages has found a surprising amount of hope in the end of the world, but that even Deadpool is humbled shows just how much has been lost.

Apocalypse is not a villain to be trifled with even in the main Marvel timeline, much less in this alternate Marvel Universe of Dark Ages where he has become the greatest remaining threat to life on Earth. Clearly, the battle for the fate of the world has only just begun. While Deadpool hopefully has some intel the other heroes can use when Dark Ages #5 releases on February 16, it's good that time is taken to honor Nick Fury, one of the Marvel Universe's greatest leaders in the comics and MCU.
