A new report from The Quorum revealed Deadpool & Wolverine is projected to earn $200M-$239M at its opening weekend domestic box office. The current victor of this year's domestic opening weekend is Dune: Part Two, which brought in $81.5M. Should Deadpool & Wolverine's projections be met, this could reinstate the MCU back to its old routes as a box office juggernaut. However, it should be noted that an R-rated movie has never achieved such a massive opening weekend; the current record is owned by the original Deadpool, which earned $132.4M in February 2016.

The Movie's Success Will Put The MCU On A Path It Has Needed For A While

It could be beneficial for this to be the only MCU movie released in 2024, so the competition is sparse. However, the recent string of box office lulls cannot go unnoticed. The box office projections for The Marvels, the MCU’s last entry, were $50-75M, much lower than Captain Marvel's $153.4M. The Marvels ended up being a box office bomb, earning $206 million worldwide against its estimated budget of $274.8M. Deadpool & Wolverine seems set to change that due to its record-breaking projections.

Moreover, a successful opening weekend could also finally lead to a promising path for the larger MCU. Recent reports have revealed that Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is the top pick to helm Avengers 5. The movie has faced a variety of setbacks. Actor Johnathan Majors, who was cast as the villain Kang, was set to appear, as the original title was The Kang Dynasty until he was fired. Should his blockbuster make the projected splash at the box office, Levy's name would be in high demand to rescue the Avengers movie that sits in creative limbo.

Various factors could help the movie slice through these projections. Deadpool is already a magnet for success, as shown through the above-mentioned success of the first film. However, Hugh Jackman’s return alone would definitely have caused projections to be high. The internet rejoiced at the surprise announcement. In fact, the trailers have featured significant footage of Wolverine, undoubtedly leading to the hype around the movie. While a lot rides on this R-Rated adventure, it cannot be debated that the potential success is very promising for Deadpool & Wolverine.
