Netflix has a new crime thriller series available, and it's become a massive hit in a short period of time, climbing the global ranks and earning a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Netflix's television library is constantly expanding, with new, binge-watchable shows releasing on the platform practically every week. Season 1 of Sirens just premiered, and while it still reigns supreme on the site, another show is quickly climbing the ladder of the streaming service's famous global rankings.

Netflix recently offered sneak peeks at some of their most popular shows at the recent Tudum event, including new info on Stranger Things season 5 and Wednesday season 2. That said, it's often the case that less-famous, non-franchise-related titles can suddenly become global phenomena when they find some luck with the Netflix algorithm. This new series is more similar to Baby Reindeer or the more recent Adolescence, gripping adult audiences globally.

Dept. Q Becomes Major Netflix Success

Audiences Around The World Are Loving The Scottish Crime Thriller

According to Netflix's streaming data, Dept. Q has quickly ascended to #3 on the platform's global list. The thriller, based on the Department Q book series, was produced in Scotland and stars Matthew Goode (The Good Wife), Chloe Pirrie (The Queen's Gambit), Kelly Macdonald (No Country For Old Men), and more. The series is also created by Scott Frank, a two-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter who worked on Logan, Minority Report, and more recently, Netflix shows like The Queen's Gambit.

The TV show follows Carl Morck, a former top-class detective working in Edinburgh, who's assigned to a new case while still burdened with guilt following an incident that left his partner paralyzed and claimed the life of another police officer. For audiences who love a good psychological thriller with powerful characters and top-notch actors, this series is not only based on celebrated books, but the screenwriting of the show has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike.

Our Take On Dept. Q's Success

Recent statistics revealed that, despite several streaming services competing with Netflix, the original streaming platform is still dominant. While recent years have seen the platform's mass quantity often related to lower quality, 2025 has been an incredibly successful turnaround. Squid Game season 2 and Adolescence were both critically acclaimed shows and have been the two top-viewed TV series of the 2024-2025 season. I'm all for Netflix continuing to produce top-quality shows, and some of its biggest titles of the year are yet to be released.
