What's Next For The Despicable Me Franchise?

The Despicable Me franchise has been massively successful for Illumination, and the latest installment in the saga has been no different. While reviews for the films, including the Minions movies, haven't always been glowing from critics, audiences continue to enjoy the franchise, turning out to theaters in a big way. Despicable Me 4's Rotten Tomatoes score, for example, is a fairly lackluster 56%, but the audience score is a much more impressive 88%.

Despicable Me 4 was made on an estimated budget of $100 million, making it the most expensive installment in the franchise. The investment has evidently paid off, however, as the film has now grossed a strong $752.2 million worldwide, comprising $314 million domestic and $438.3 million from overseas. Though Despicable Me 4's VOD release is imminent, the film remains in theaters and continues to exhibit strong legs, meaning its box office total will continue to rise over the coming weeks.

With Despicable Me 4 having been a success, attention has now turned to the future of the franchise. Minions 3 has already been confirmed and is dated for June 2027, but Despicable Me 5 hasn't yet gotten the green light. If any Despicable Me 4 is any indication, this Illumination franchise still has gas left in the tank.
